Hi John,
Pattern is a referencing object, where you can assign to multiple work-areas at same time.
For ex- you have work areas like utility areas, which have boilers and power generators. these areas usually the major agent would be noise, electricity and diesel, etc.,
How pattern useful in IHS -
Exposure profiles can be created in pattern and assign them to work areas. exposure profile ratings can be calculated in pattern itself.
If you have multiple work areas with the same profile (as mentioned above multiple utility areas around), this will reduce the load that whenever there is a change in exposure profile, need not to go to each work area and change them.
you can just to do the changes in pattern.
Pattern is just referencing, not copying.....hence, whenever the changes you can do in pattern. so that authomatically the data will be updated in all work areas assigned to that pattern.
Patterns can be a collective pattern - you can assign multiple patterns to this patterns. and assign further to work areas.
