MII Pre-emptave issues monitoring

Hi,

I would like to know what to monitor in SAP MII to pre-empt
that the MII server might start to run into issues, so in other words to get
early warning that there might be potential issues before it actually occurs.

Also how can one measure the MII box to see how many MII
projects one will be able to load on the MII server before one will need to
upsize the server or start splitting the MII projects across multiple servers.

I know netweaver has multiple stats that one can monitor but
is there a specific combination of these stats that will address the two points
above.

Otherwise is there someone in SAP that I can contact that
will be able to assist with this question?

  Thanks

Hi Morne,

I believe there is a sizing document available in Services Marketplace which might have some insights into how to monitor those stats.  If it does not help, I will find someone to respond to your discussion topic.

Hi Mike,

   Thanks for that.

   The more information the better.

   I'll have a look into this .....

It will still be greate if one can speak to someone who has knowlidge in this regard.

Thanks

I also just remembered that Sam Castro did a performance evaluation a couple of years ago and provided a lot of information on how to monitor system performance.  Don't know where it is now, so if you can't find it, let me know and I will ping Sam.

Morne,

I am happy to go through this with you but please first check out these documents that we have on the SAP MII SDN Wiki () in the Guides and Guidelines section:

SAP MII Administration Handbook: This document discusses tools within MII and
Netweaver for monitoring, max performance, and troubleshooting.  MII
Administrators and developers should take a look at this document to solve
common issues with their MII solution.

SAP MII Monitoring Services : This document describes in details some of the MII
services that relate to monitoring.  It is meant to provide additional detail
for the SAP MII Administration Handbook

From here you can also check out pages 19-22 of this guide where I outline various settings and parameters that affect the scalability and performance of a NetWeaver instance:

Performance Analysis Summary (PDF)*:* This is a summary of each

of the performance tests along with a detailed analysis of the results of each

test.

Hope this helps and just reply to this thread if you have any specific questions, I should point out that MII Fully Integrates with Solution Manager for Remote Performance Monitoring and this is outlined in the documentation available on Service Marketplace (http://service.sap.com/instguides -> SAP Business Suite Applications -> SAP Manufacturing -> SAP MII -> SAP MII 14.0) -> Configuration Guide SAP MII140

The section on setting up Solution Manager integration starts on page 45.

Hi Salvatore,

Thanks for the links they are very helpfull indeed.

Which of the Metrics in the Monitoring Services (or any of the other Metrics)  can one combine in your opinion    in order to understand if one can load extra projects on a single MII box.

In otherwords not to load the project on and then only realise that the Box will not be able to handle

the extra project, or to know that one might need to adjust the NW configuration paramaters, such as the memory, to be able to manage an extra project ?

Looking at Performance Analysis Summary (PDF) on page 19-22, what can one report on

to indicate which of these paramaters would require adjustments ? Or what these optimimum settings would be as suggestions without a trial and error process. So if one has some reporting options and based on the metrics that one has monitored and reported on what can one then recommend as settings that needs to be adjusted.

Thanks Again for your help

Morne,

I will go through your questions one by one:

  1. Which of the Metrics in the Monitoring Services (or any of the other Metrics)  can one combine in your opinion    in order to understand if one can load extra projects on a single MII box.
    1. Monitoring Services are more for identifying slow and long running content in order to identify areas where additional tuning is required or where target/source systems may be straining to keep up and in turn have a large range between Min/Max run times.  It will also help you identify "peak" load times on the server.  If you would like to know what's available to "Scale" the box and applications then the primary metrics (Same as in Perf Analysis Summary Doc) are CPU, Available memory, and Disk I/O.  I include Disk I/O as this will indicate if you are paging and out of available memory that is allocated to the NetWeaver instance.  The main two for scale though are really CPU & Memory and NetWeaver will scale up and down based on available resources and it's configuration as shown here (This is 7.11 docs but i think there is a 7.31 section; ask the NetWeaver team for help here): http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce71/helpdata/en/43/73949862c16fcbe10000000a1553f6/content.htm
    2. Looking at Performance Analysis Summary (PDF) on page 19-22, what can one report on to indicate which of these paramaters would require adjustments ? Or what these optimimum settings would be as suggestions without a trial and error process. So if one has some reporting options and based on the metrics that one has monitored and reported on what can one then recommend as settings that needs to be adjusted.
      1. These are intended to help you locate "where" the settings are that can affect performance of the Security and Application Engines inside of NetWeaver.  It's up to you and the hardware you have (this is just a benchmark) to determine what the values can be in order to allow the instance to scale without crashing the box completely.  We are planning to release an official sizing guide for MII 14.0 later this year that will also help you to identify the number of SAPS required to perform various operations.

I hope this insight helps.

Thanks for the help,

This has certainly helped me and also confirmed my own thinking.

Much appreciated !
