Hi Experts ,

I have read that 1:N relationship from Material to Specification is possible in SAP EH&S ,but I haven't came across any examples in my project so far and not sure in which situation this is needed .

Can someone explain with a practical example in which case this relationship can be used ?

Thanks

Suganth Kumar.

HI Juan ,

Thanks for your reply .

yes assigning one material to different specific category (agent, substance, waste code)is possible and understandable but I can see that SAP allows assigning a material  to 2 specifcations of same category for example Real substances.

You  can refer the link below where it says it is possible .

https://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/45/32ba6933f0ad4f8c8ae9cbd38bb91a/content.htm

I am not able to correlate to a practical example how this can be used .Please clarify.

Thanks

Suganth Kumar.

Hi Suganth,

Technically, you can assign a material to any number of specifications, however, in most cases it doesn't make sense. Like shown in the help text you linked, it works and does make sense in the case of a material that contains more than one component, e.g. the material is an epoxy glue that is made up of the resin and the hardener. That will be ONE material, but TWO specifications (spec 1: resin, spec 2: hardener).

Dear Suganth

the topic of material - specificaiotn link is quite "special"; similar threads discussing this can be found. As mentioned by Ralph: SAP allows "all" (nearly); but then any EHS part does have "special" logics; to deal with this situation; and you must ! deal with the situation or many of the EHS coreprocesses will not run properly.

only some  examples:

Before you start EHS projects: check which modules you need (PS, DG etc.); check the demand from customer side; try to make it as simple as possible; in any cases: there are lot of places there SAP is providing function modules and other options which you "must" use, so that some EHS core functionality can work (e,.g in relation if substance volume trackiing etc.) ; these function modules are dedicated to help EHS (by using material number) to select the"right" specification; the "issue" is: how to identify the "right" one? And how can i specify the rulefor identifying the "right" link.

Pay attention on the last example of Ralph. Quite good (and special example) why sometimes you need "special" solution for material specification relation

I am sorry to say: regarding your question one could write a "book" with lot's of answers.

Hi Suganth,

The relationship is 1:N from Specification to Material or Material-Center.

A material can be linked to a specification (Substance) for MSDS, and the same material can be linked to other specification (Risk agent) for Industrial Hygiene, or to another specification (Wastecode) for waste management.

Regards.
