Can anyone point me to where I can get the standard data model of SAP EHS classic?
I have been following threads, reading Christoph's Blog posts however all the links I have found are broken.
As I have been reading, I can see that it is very important to start off with the correct Substance spec types, compositions and value assignments to be able to use follow on EHS processes (filling DG, Hazardous Masters etc.) and I want to get an understanding of these relationships and the best practice in building a Spec Library.
Thank you
John

Hello John Wootton
For Specification Types :
A real substance is a substance that is physically present in the company
In the standard delivery, you can assign one or more materials to one real substance. You can assess the value assessment types of a real substance yourself or copy it using a reference or an inheritance of listed substances.
You use real substance groups to map real substance families that possess the same properties.
A listed substance is a substance whose properties are described in laws and in literature.
Unlike real substances, listed substances are not manufactured, traded, or purchased. You can use a listed substance as a "properties model" for a real substance by using the listed substance as a source specification in a reference or inheritance relationship.
You use listed substance groups to map listed substance families that possess the same properties.
A copy template supports the creation of a specification for a new substance with predefined assessments.
The uses and exposure scenarios of the delivered materials are assigned to specifications for which this specification type is defined. This data of the delivered materials is provided by the supplier, for example, using extended safety data sheets as inbound documents. Materials are not assigned to specifications with specification type External Real Substance.
Exposure scenarios that are assigned to a real or pure substance in the value assignment type Use and Exposure Scenario (SAP_EHS_1027_001) are created as specifications with this specification type. This means that the exposure scenarios are linked to the real or pure substances by means of the list in the value assignment type Use and Exposure Scenario.
Compositions :
https://blogs.sap.com/2015/11/27/sap-eh-s-composition-types/
The different types of compositions encountered in EHS include, Standard Composition, Exact Composition Based on Products (ECbP), Exact Components based on Components / Starting Material, Hazardous Composition, Legal Composition, REACH Use and Exposure Composition (U&E Comp), Impurities, Hazardous Ingredients (EU), DPDPlus and Pure Composition. Besides above standard types, based on client requirement there might be other flavours too. Here’s the short overview of each of the component type.
1) Exact Components based on Products – Substances that are actually contained in the product after the production process has been completed and that can be detected by analysis. Can also consist of products which in turn consist of other components. This component type is generally used by different Expert Rules to calculated secondary data.
2) Standard Composition – Ingredients are substances, that are actually contained in the product after the production process has been completed and that can be detected by analysis. These are generally taken from ECbP composition type and added together. These are calculated by Expert Rules – EHS Standard Comp Rule set.
3) Hazardous Ingredients – On the Composition tab page, specify the contents of the corresponding ingredients with lower limit, upper limit, and average value. In addition, specify the unit for the selected reference value.
4) Components with Occupational Exposure Limits – List of ingredients or ingredient groups (and their quantities) that are subject to an atmospheric limit value and must be specified with this limit value in the EU Safety Data Sheet in the current version), or in accordance with the Technical Regulations for Hazardous Substances.
5) Legal Composition – It’s an optional composition type excluding all impurities from Standard Composition for meeting legal requirements lik REACh. This together with recent release of Impurties –ideally should equal to Standard Composition.
6) REACH Use and Exposure Composition – Contains all substance, which are relevant for supply chain communication. Substances which are used in Compliance Workbench for triggering Supply chain communication.

Hello John
not sure what you are looking for. Do you discuss the "paint" example of SAP? Check here:

Regarding:
"As I have been reading, I can see that it is very important to start off with the correct Substance spec types, compositions and value assignments to be able to use follow on EHS processes (filling DG, Hazardous Masters etc.)"
You need to separate the topic little bit. Normally you use e.g. REAL_SUB REAL_GRP, LIST_SUB, PURE_SUB etc.
For "composition"and other stuff: this depends if or if not you use "content" (Ruleset and WWI templates you buy); this content "support" some basic "maintenance" approach; but you can do an EHS Set up with out any "content" (it takes longer and it will costs more.. but it is possible).
But you are totally free to set up EHS as you would like to. This is more or less the same in SAP MM:
It is your decision: do you use "FERT", "HALB", "ROH" and how you use it. SAP is very flexible in set up (not only in EHS environment)
So what ever you read somethere (e.g. here in this FORUM): this is a kind of "best practise" how to use EHS.
Overall: depending on your start: a huge amount of the "real" EHS set up is customer specific...
