Hello All ,

what is the purpose of data editor ? Can we use OCC for loading legacy extracted data in ehs and how? also what are the different techniques followed by companies to handle data migration ?

Data Editor is the tool for which will be used to upload the legacy data into SAP EHS (Legacy data need to be in some defined formats).

Yes, we can use OCC for loading the legacy data into EHS, technically OCC is the new version of Data Editor.

No - OCC is not the new version of the Data Editor:

The Data Editor was a tool developed and owned by TechniData.

It's sole purpose was to load (insert/delete/update) data into EH&S based an MS Excel spreadsheets.

The OCC was/is developed by SAP and owned by SAP.

It sole purpose (before 2015) was to load regulatory data into EH&S based on XML files.

After TechniData was bought by SAP the data editor was no longer available as a software tool (but could be bought as a service).

Beginning of 2015 SAP has integrated the data editor functionality into the OCC.

So now OCC can be used to load:

• legacy data based on Excel sheets
• regulatory data based on XML files

wow this is interesting explanation and thank you Mr EHS EHSM for clarification . I was confused about this topic. is there any pdf which will help me to understand how occ can be used to load legacy data into ehs . also under what circumstances do we use excel and ms access .

please check SAP marketplace. You will find very useful pdf file to understand the options of the new OCC version. Refer to the link i provided. In some of the threads the link (reference to OSS note)  to this pdf file is provided

Shortly: you can use now XML files to do the upload or "EXCEL" like tables structures.

High level: The OCC can be used to load what you would like to load; Originally the OCC was more or less related to "legacy" upload only; but in theory you can upload e.g. denisity, flashpoint etc.

this topic was discussed very often in the last 6 months. Take a look at:

Chapter "OCC"

If you focus on EHS classic: you have only one tool which is normally used to do the job This is the standard EHS import (many consultants do have big issues in using this). If you still have set up specifications you can use the OCC (which is follower of DataEditor) to add data.

Data migration is a "big term". You might have the need to "import" or to "export" the data. In both cases in EHS Classic the standard options are used.

In theory (which is as well discussed in some threads). you can use ALE to export and import EHS data. In this case (for import) the approach External system => XI/PI=> SAP ERP might be an option. Never heard about this option. Same is possinble the other way around: SAP ERP => XI/PI => External system

So therefore the answer to your question: Can we use OCC for loading legacy extracted data in ehs and how?

Is "yes you can" but the specification must be set up in your system, yet (and this is rarely the case),

what are the different steps needed to follow to create load file of specification and phrases to load in sap through OCC . Do we need MS access for this ?  also what other datas can be loaded through OCC ?
