Processes Are Under-Utilized Assets

Part 2 of a 5-Part Series

GDPR requires companies to understand how personal data flows through business processes and applications. While most companies have business process models as part of their enterprise architecture, tracking how personal data flows through processes and applications can provide a clearer picture of whether processes are running as designed. Knowing where and when processing takes place, organizations can truly understand what business processes are using personal data, if those processes include third-party entities, what applications support those processes, and if there are undocumented variant sub-processes.

Utilize Data-based Process Discovery

To measure the efficiency and conformance of business processes, intelligent enterprises need to be able to objectively assess how well processes execute. By using data-based process discovery, organizations can identify all process variants and bottlenecks that may increase costs or lead to compliance problems.

Every interaction with a business application leaves a digital footprint often known as an event log. Process mining solutions can extract these event logs and transform them into a compelling visualization that shows precisely how processes were executed. This view makes it simple to see each activity across every process variant.

Visualizing and understanding the operative processes running within enterprise applications and distilling large volumes of data about business process execution into intuitive graphical representations, can provide a clear picture of how tasks are being performed, how well they run, and where they consume the most manual effort.

Process mining technologies can provide other powerful data-based insights. Process owners and business analysts can quickly identify the root cause of problems, spot opportunities for automation, and detect noncompliance and potentially fraudulent behaviors. They can also gain enhanced insight that helps them explore and analyze process performance.

Remediate Deviations for Greater Compliance

Data-based process discovery can represent business transactions as a process diagram, presenting users with complete transparency into business processes. And it can automatically identify and group cases that follow the same execution path into variants to help users spot process deviations and inefficient loops.

Including key performance indicators can offer details about cycle times and bottlenecks. Drilling down on specific process steps or single process instances can identify the root cause of deviations and process inefficiencies. By identifying previously unrecognized process weaknesses, intelligent enterprises can improve process efficiency, quality, and reliability, and they can remediate processes that could create compliance issues.

At SAPPHIRENow, SAP Market Influencer Eric Kavanagh sat down with Bastian Nominacher, co-CEO of Celonis, to discuss how companies can leverage greater process transparency to drive compliance, as well as improve overall efficiency.

Bastian’s Recommendation

“Process are very much an under-utilized asset. Every time a process is executed, you create a digital footprint…the data record of your customer is also your value chain.”
