Whenever I’m introduced to someone in a social context and they
ask who I work for, their response is invariably: “Oh yes, I’ve seen those ads
that say ‘The best-run businesses run SAP’”. Some people are still under the impression
that we’re all about ERP systems for manufacturing behemoths. So they’re pleasantly surprised when I tell
them about some of the really diverse industries and agile companies we work
with, and how hands-on and human our technology can be when imaginatively applied.
I’ve been keeping an eye on our World of Innovations heat map this week, in particular the topics of sport, science
and technology, and culture. So I thought I’d pick out a representative handful of use cases that illustrate the
kind of thing I’m talking about.
Take Wefunk, for example. Yes, they are a manufacturer – but of skateboards. They
were looking to unleash collaboration beyond the confines of back-and-forth
email trails, but had no desire to own or operate infrastructure themselves. They’re now using SAP technologies
to create a “corporate memory” in the cloud, so internal and external stakeholders can
collaborate, share knowledge and take ownership of innovations.
Then there’s Medtronic. They make the pacemakers that allow people with heart conditions to enjoy a fuller and more
productive life. They’re using our in-memory technology to capture and analyse unstructured text feedback from
seven million patients worldwide. This helps the company to understand what
it’s really like to live with their devices, and informs their product development and sales processes.
And if neither of those examples touches your life directly,
how about Lionsgate. They’re responsible for some of the
edgiest movies and TV series on our screens – from The Hunger Games, The Hurt
Locker and the Saw franchise to Nashville and Mad Men. Using a range of SAP technologies, the motion
picture studio is able to transform data into insights that give its entrepreneurial
spirit free rein, and enable it to reach out to consumers in new ways.
That’s what I love about my work. No two days are the same. And the exciting thing about
innovation is that it’s not about technology for technology’s sake. It’s our job to ensure the software fits so
naturally with your business as to be almost invisible. So whether you’re a commercial raspberry
grower or an aerospace company, you can concentrate on what you do best and
propel your business forward.
