The main purpose back then when electrical grids had been installed was to provide consumers with a unidirectional electricity flow from centrally dispatched power plants.  Due to increasing demands, investments in the energy system were made. Nevertheless, it was still out of scope to fundamentally rethink the way energy systems work.


Today, the energy sector is at a crossroad. Climate change, rising costs and outmoded grid infrastructures require new energy technologies and concepts. As part of this change, grids need to become smarter and a two-way communication needs to be enabled.  At this point, ICT technologies come into play allowing suppliers, devices and consumers to communicate within the grid. However, also ICT technologies need to be modified and improved in order to guarantee a stable and reliable energy supply.

The way how the energy sector can benefit from Future Internet technologies is currently being explored within the European Future Internet Public-Private Partnership Programme (FI-PPP). More precisely, it is the main focus of the use case FINSENY. The aim of FINSENY is to evaluate how the energy sector can benefit from the Future Internet Core Platform developed within FI-Ware.
