In May 2012, SAP Research Singapore brought together 22 students from several local polytechnics and universities to commence a three-month internship program, with the students divided into teams to work on researching new technologies that would benefit SAP, the students and the universities. A total of ten projects were initiated.
On July 23, 2012, the SAP Research Student Expo was held at the SAP APJ office in Singapore to showcase the different innovations produced by our interns. Representatives from each project demonstrated their work at demo stations, and the event was attended by guests from the Singapore government, lecturers, professors, and fellow SAP colleagues.
The guests were shown the ten projects, which tackled issues such as sustainability, urban solutions, network solutions, and collaboration tools. The projects shown at the Student Expo include:
- Sustainability Business Network Questionnaire - The SBN Questionnaire System is a web application that aims to provide users with a flexible and convenient platform for survey management and creation, for the purpose of capturing the sustainability indexes of various companies.
- sRADAR: Real Time Anomaly Detection in Moving Objects - A software prototype for anomaly detection in moving objects which is able to analyse the live data streams from ships to detect and report the abnormal behaviour of ships in real time.
- sRADAR: HANA is Hot - The students built a software prototype to manage high-speed, high-volume data streams, which contain complex information such as geographical, historical, and voyage data. It can also be simultaneously utilised for complex event processing and analytics.
- sRADAR: A methodology for the Proactive Business Development of a Short-term Research Project - The key principle of this methodology is to identify the core business values of a research project through proactive engagements with potential stakeholders.
- A Mobile-driven Solution for Supply Chain Management - B2B and B2C - How retail businesses treat their customers has a major impact from encouraging initial interest to generating repeat business. The students built a new prototype mobile application for shoppers to enhance their shopping experience, and also enable retail businesses to interact directly with the in-store customers.
- Quantum Computing: Future of Computing Technology - The study seeks to understand the theories behind quantum computing, including quantum properties such as quantum entanglement and superposition as well as the challenges behind the construction of a quantum computer.
- A Tool for Knowledge Abstraction, Retention and Integration (KARI) - This interactive system is designed to help improve knowledge management for both individuals as well as for organisations as a whole.
- Data Stream Market Place - Data Stream Market Place is a cloud based prototype for managing real time data streams. Publishers may use the system for hosting and broadcasting their data sets and consumers have a common platform for browsing and purchasing subscriptions to these data sets for use in their applications.
- IdeaWall Android - IdeaWall is an award-winning iPhone application developed by SAP Research that turns any flat surface such as a wall or a whiteboard into an interactive smart board using just a mobile phone and a projector. IdeaWall has been successfully migrated to the Android platform.
The half-day event received a good response from both our guests and students. For the guests, it provided a gateway for learning more about SAP innovations and technologies, and for the students, it provided an opportunity for sharing their work through live demonstrations, knowledge-sharing, and discussions about future trends.
