During the production order release, you want production order to check two storage locations instead of one storage location for ATP check but at the same time you don’t system to check at the plant level in this case using MRP area with storage location helps.
Consider we have two storage locations for which ATP needs to be perform for the component
Usually with the normal ATP check system allows perform ATP check only at the one storage location which is assigned the component screen of the production order and which is derived from either production storage location from MRP2 view of material master, Supply area from Work centre or Production storage location assign in the component details in BOM.
But When you activate material requirements planning (MRP) with MRP areas, the ATP check is performed at the MRP area level instead of the plant level. Materials previously checked at the plant level are now checked at the MRP area level. When no MRP areas are defined, the plant functions as the plant MRP area. In this situation, the availability check occurs within the plant MRP area.

In Customizing for MRP in the IMG activity Define availability check for components Determine check, you have defined per checking rule whether the ATP check is to be carried out with or without storage location check.
In OPJJ scope of check is defined as Plant level MRP check
ATP without Storage Location Check
If a storage location check is not set, only a single-level ATP check at the MRP area level will be performed. The relevant MRP area is determined by the storage locations and Customizing settings, though only storage location data is needed to select the appropriate MRP area. The ATP check occurs solely within that MRP area.

Let’s say I have requirement for 600 Quantity and PSA does not have stock available and AFS has 500 Quantity in stock and at the plant level we have 700 quantity in stock.

If I release the order it shows the missing part
It only confirms 500 quantity which is stock from AFS location as PSA does not have any stock
Hence system considers the stock at MRP area level for ATP and not at the plant level even if the OPJJ config set to check MRP at plant level. Here MRP area is getting determined from PSA as PSA is assigned to component of production order, system checks if PSA is assigned to any MRP area and then MRP area gets selected
