If I set a group as "must have" do I have to select the whole tree (underneath that group) to "must have" or do they get selected by default? ...any advice ? Thank you!
All (sub-)objects, I believe. It's an object-level setting. Otherwise Authors would be able to Remove Locally for the sub-objects, which isn't what you want.
Yes Dirk is correct. If you select a parent object as a Must Have object, all child objects of the parent are also marked as Must Have and always downloaded to Producer during startup.
