ONB: Data type of the Display keys should be same as the data type of that key in Data Dictionary?

Previous Implementer chooses two different data types for the same Field.
For Ex.: Gender Field in Personal Information,

Key: gender
DataType: SF HCM Picklist
Display Key: gender_text
DataType: string

What is the best practice here?
