We are looking to inactivate event reasons that are no longer used for event derivation; what is the down side affect if we do this?

Thank you so much for the additional steps.

For pending workflows with that event reason and records after the date of deactivation it may cause data issues (hence those should first be fixed before doing that).

The only side effect for future ones is if for instance a workflow was supposed to trigger from it, if some other business rule was supposed to trigger on it, if an integration did something with that event reason and/or if some report did something with that even reason. If all those things have been checked, it should generally be fine.
