HCM vs HXM technical database differences

Hi all, I am struggling to find out what the basic technical difference is between HCM and HXM.

I understand HCM is a NetWeaver platform with tables such as PA0001, residing on databases like HANA.

I also understand HXM is a web based service/interface, but where does the data eventually end up. I'm guessing HANA somewhere.If so, are the tables accessible directly in the HANA db. It may not be best practices or recommended to access the data directly, but I merely wish to understand where the data ends up.

Any supporting docs or links would be great.
