In this post, I would like to present our survey which is intended to improve employees’ onboarding in SAP S/4HANA and In-App Learning. The survey focuses on so called “Electronic Performance Support Systems” (EPSS). This is the rather less known technical terms for systems that support employees’ performance in the flow of work and therefore in their workplace. They provide the right information to the right user at the right time and by doing that they also promote employees’ informal learning.
SAP provides EPSS with the embedded help and In-App Learning that is part of our SAP Training and Adoption portfolio and available in several of our cloud products.
As part of my doctorate I investigate EPSS scientifically and use a three-step research design for this. The first stage is a more general questionnaire study that focuses on the questions:
- Which aids are available for you in your workplace when you are facing a problem in the ERP-System?
- Which EPSS features are most effective in supporting employees?
- What influence do personal and contextual factors have?
By answering these questions, insights into user needs can be incorporated into the further development of our products and the Web Assistant content. Of course you support also scientific research on EPSS.
In order to derive reliable results, as many participants as possible are necessary. Therefore, I am happy about everyone who takes part in the survey!

In order to additionally determine the significance of EPSS and other learning trends for employee learning from the perspective of HR employees and HR managers, a further questionnaire was created for them.
