This article talks about the three aspects around 9-grid matrix in SF: Succession matrix grid report, EP Matrix Grid Placement History portlet, and Trend Element. And we will also discuss some most popular questions when handling LOD-SF-SCM-MXG component cases.

1. Succession matrix grid report

This is the matrix grid for showing a group of employees. Users can define Review Period (date range) and Target Population of the report. When using Matrix Grid Reports: Performance-Potential, the three options are important: Exclude in-progress forms when retrieving ratings? Exclude deleted forms when retrieving ratings? Use average of all found ratings, instead of latest? These will determine the rating source detail and rating calculation in report.

2. EP Matrix Grid Placement History portlet

This is individual view of rating matrix in Employee Profile for each employee. EP Matrix Grid Placement History portlet will always show the latest placement, while succession matrix can be defined with previous date range. Usually, the date displays in Matrix Grid Placement History portlet is like: 02/15/2025 - (no end date). It's because rating effective date boundary is based on end date and we can consider the blank end date as Today. Detailed information can be found in:

3. Trend Element.

First we will talk about the difference between sysOverallPerformance (Performance ** Manager View Only) portlet and Performance History portlet. The number of ratings in Performance ** Manager View Only portlet >= The number of ratings in Performance History portlet. Performance ** Manager View Only portlet will show all performance ratings in system. Performance History portlet is Scorecard portlet, which means it will follow the Scorecard Process and Date Range. The process and date range is configured in admin tool Configure People Profile > General Settings > Talent Data Settings.

There are three main ways to add ratings in system: 1. PM forms/ Calibration, 2. MSS, 3. Import. When doing import, please pay attention to min and max. The matrix grid rating scale is not always same as PM form rating scales. For example: Importing rating 5 when max is 3 will cause the rating disappear in matrix grid report.

Here are some other frequently asked questions summarized from matrix grid related cases and troubleshooting steps:

  • Succession/EP Matrix Grid Report blank problem
    - Check ratings during the review period.
    - Check data source, configuration options.
    - If the rating comes from Calibration, a Sync (Regenerate job) may be required.
  • Talent card matrix grid different with succession matrix grid
    - Admin Center> Manage Talent Card> Succession Talent Card
    1. Use Employee Profile Rating configuration
    2. Use Succession Planning Matrix Grid admin configuration

  • Deleted PM forms rating still shows in EP matrix grid report
    - After enabling 'Exclude deleted forms when retrieving ratings' option in Matrix Grid Reports: Performance-Potential, ratings from deleted PM forms will disappear only in Succession matrix grid report. But in Employee profile historical placement portlet, ratings from deleted forms will still exist. We need to purge deleted forms to get the ratings cleared.
