One of the key business challenges when developing and deriving a strategic workforce plan is to align the human resource planning with the strategic business goals and to ensure to have the right people at the right time.

The new 2H 2020 SAP Best Practices for SAP SuccessFactors Workforce Planning - Strategic Workforce Planning has been created and released to customers and partners to do exactly that with an ambitious value proposition:

Designed for business strategists in the Human Resources line of business who want to ensure the contribution of the HR strategy to the business’s success and strategic objectives, SAP Best Practices for SAP SuccessFactors Workforce Planning is a planning solution that helps to predict the future development of workforce demand and supply. Unlike flat file exports and spreadsheets, the solution offers HR data extractions and scenario-based collaborative forecasting and planning.

Built on SAP Analytics Cloud planning and analytics capabilities, this new planning solution for SAP SuccessFactors offers one single cloud-based solution to empower planners across functions. Strong self-service and what-if capabilities increase planning accuracy, allow for contextual decision-making and foster collaboration in the planning process.

What is Strategic Workforce Planning with SAP Best Practices for SAP SuccessFactors?

Strategic Workforce Planning is the process of understanding the current workforce, determining future needs and supply, and identifying the gap between supply and demand. It’s about a scenario-based identification of future forecasted shortage or surplus in the workforce.

The planning process starts with creating the demand forecast based on certain strategic output targets, such as revenue. Then the supply forecast is created, taking into account forecasted changes in the workforce, such as terminations and retirements. These two forecasts result in the gap forecast. The gap forecast indicates certain shortages and surplus per planning dimension, such as organizational unit, location, and job classification. The future can be modeled via planning scenarios, which can be for example a high growth scenario. Each scenario is a story of how the future might unfold and is the basis for the planning forecast.

The solution is designed with two roles in mind and each role comes with a role-specific launchpad. The Planner and the Planning Administrator launchpads guide the users through the various process steps in Strategic Workforce Planning:

Predefined analytical charts and visualizations support the planners in creating and communicating the strategic workforce plan:
