As I was listening to Tom Raftery’s podcast interview with Timo Elliott on Digital Transformation, I became increasingly more excited about being at my first SuccessConnect event.  Not just because Michael J. Fox would be there and well - it’s in Vegas, but here is where we’ll meet transformative leaders.

These leaders are far and few apart

According to SAP’s survey 4 Ways Leaders Sets Themselves Apart, only 3% have completed digital projects across their organization.

So, what is a transformation leader?

The first thing I thought of was Henry Ford’s famous quote “if I asked people what they wanted, we’d be riding faster horses”.  Now it’s debatable if Mr. Ford actually made this statement but the idea is the ability to see beyond the current norms.

Did you know that in the late 1990s GM, Chevrolet, Honda, and Toyota all introduced fully electric models?  They couldn’t sell them because neither the public nor the manufacturers could envision a car without gas or the infrastructure that supports a gas car. Since no one could imagine it, it didn’t happen sooner.

“Transformative leaders” are people who embrace the possibilities even if they don’t understand or imagine it, they are people willing to explore and strive to think beyond their current business models.

Industries know the digital transformation is happening and their organization’s survival depends on it. Yet many industries struggle with what the next step looks like or even know how to get started.

To get started, leaders within the organization must make digitization their strategic focus and possess similar priorities in terms of investing in innovative resources and solutions. So, what are the 4 traits that sets transformation leaders apart?

  1. They are focused on true transformation - Avoid reactionary piecemeal changes and instead embrace a cross-organizational approach designed to enable constant change.

  2. They transform customer-facing functions first - They’ve successfully connected their customer-facing efforts to business processes across the enterprise and extended them to partners and suppliers.

  3. They invest in - next- generation technology (such as cloud computing, Big Data and analytics, IoT, machine learning and AI) in a bimodal approach to intelligently run their enterprise while rapidly integrating these new technologies to remain ahead of the competition.

  4. Last but not least - THEY ARE TALENT DRIVEN. Leaders are investing heavily in recruiting and training people to drive the digital transformation. Their shared goal is to improve employee engagement and ensure they’re prepared to meet the demand for new technologies and new ways of working.

Finding the Right Talent

For example, industries that are perceived as more traditional and “less-sexy” (such as: banking, utilities, public sector, manufacturing, oil and gas), are challenged with attracting digitally minded millennials while retraining and managing the aging / retiring workforce.  Cultivating the innovative leaders of tomorrow will require extending outside traditional work and employment models.           Discussions like this and specific HR call to action is among the many topics that will be discussed at SuccessConnect.

SuccessConnect is where today’s Transformational Leaders will converge.
