General Display Name Opt out in Second Half of 2024

We are excited to announce the upcoming release for our opt out of General Display Name, so the employee name could be consistent globally in suite. Starting with the Second Half 2024 release, General Display Name will be enabled for all customers with the option to opt out. For the First Half 2025 release, General Display Name will become universal for all customers and the opt out option will be removed.

General Display Name is release to customer two years ago. For now thousands of customers have enabled and been benefit from the feature. With General Display Name, customer can configure employee names that are expected to be displayed consistently across SAP SuccessFactors HXM Suite. A new admin option, Enable adoption of General Display Name, is added to control it. You can see this option under Admin Center -> Company System and Logo Settings. The new capability provides both consistency and flexibility to managing display names. With the new capability, general display names preferred by employees are displayed in all interactions where a legal name isn’t required, while administrators and HRBPs can also access a person’s legal name whenever needed. For details how to configure General Display Name please refer to https://community.sap.com/t5/human-capital-management-blogs-by-sap/adopting-general-display-name/ba-...

If customer has already enabled General Display Name, nothing will be changed. If customer haven't enable General Display Name but configured name format on People Profile, the name format will be used for General Display Name. For non-EC customers and for EC customers who haven't configure any name format, the system calculates the value according to message key COMMON_USER_DISPLAYNAME in company default locale, by default the message key is defined as a combination of first name, middle name and last name. If there is no full name, middle name, and last name, the field value is set to Unknown. To migrate to General Display Name, we need to run a job to generate display name according to name format configuration. That will be scheduled after new release downtime upgrade. Details please refer to below migration timetable

Migration timetable

Based on current release schedule, we will plan to run the General Display Name migration job as below: JobType: Migrate General Display Name

If the job is scheduled, you can see the scheduled job in Scheduled Job Manager. Track the status of the job in Scheduled Job Manager, you could have better idea when the upgrade is finished.

Hello Team,

I would like to ask if for example a customer would not like to opt in on this new feature because they wanted to maintain the current format that they have ..Would there any be other option to disable this feature if they decided not to opt in ?

@Carlo1_1990 Thank you for feedback. If customer would not like to opt-in. They can choose opt-out after the running of migration job. You can opt it out in Company system and logo setting->Enable Adoption of General Display Name.

Enable general display will follow the current format if it was configured previously on employee profile name format.

Is there any way to configure an employee selecteble name format code as there is for the formal name? This is a requirement for all Dutch customers as the last name is a selectable combination of their birth name and partner name

Hi @ArjenVHooydonk ,

It is not supported to configure name format for general display name on employee level as formal name. But you can configure formal name in name format for general display name. Then formal name is used for general display name.

Thanks

Harvey

Hello,

We are not opting in on General Display Name yet and have this feature disabled in our Preview and Production instances and will disable it again after the 2H production release. Could you please indicate what will happen when the migration job runs? Will there be any change visible in our systems, even though we have the feature disabled?

Thanks,

Laura

Hi @Laura,

If you have disabled general display name after migration. Then there should be no visible change in your system. Would you share why do you want to disable it?

Thanks

Hi @HarveyXu,

My question was what will happen after the migration when we have already disabled the feature before the migration.

Thanks,

Laura

Hi @LauraZ,

If you disabled the feature before, migration will initialize general display name and enable the feature in "Company System and Logo Setting".  But you can disable it if need, then nothing should be changed.

Thanks

Hi @HarveyXu,

Thank you for your reply. How will I know at what exact date and time the migration enables the feature? I want to prevent that our end users are being faced with this feature (for now).

Thanks,
Laura

Hello,

Hello ,

I have two questions:

1. if I understood it correctly, the General Display name is composed of first name, middle name and last name by default and if there is no value, the field shows unknown.

So if a worker Thomas Test has no middle name, is the display name then Thomas Unknown Test?

2. you can deactivate the General Display Name again. Is there a period of time after which the General Display Name can no longer be deactivated and must be used?

Thanks for an answer

Nicole

Hi @LauraZ ,

The migration period for production environment is 11/24/2024 12 : 00 AM to 12/1/2024 11:59 PM. As job server will pick migration job according to load of server, It is difficult to predict when exactly the migration job will be run. But you can check with Scheduled Job Manager if "Migrate General Display Name" is completed, you can disable it in "Company System and Logo Settings"

Thanks

Harvey

Hi @nicolehe04 ,

If only middle name is empty the display name will be composed as Thomas Test not Thomas Unknown Test. If all first name, middle name and last name are empty, then display name will be Unknown.

In the First Half 2025 release, general display name will be universal, then it can't be disabled.

Thanks

Hi @HarveyXu,

Thank you for your reply. That means that as a customer I have to check continuously for a whole week if the migration job has ran and the feature is enabled in logo settings. Why is it not being pushed during the window of the production release go live? Then we are able to directly disable it and don't have our end users facing this feature.

Hi @LauraZ ,

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience. The time window of downtime upgrade is only few hours, as the migration job need to be scheduled in multiple batch based on load of job server per each DC, that would take for days. It is not feasible to put it upgrade window. As we tracked, almost all migration are finished in four days, only few company experienced issues and need check and re-trigger the job. So likely it doesn't need whole week to check the migration job.

Thanks

Harvey

Hello,

as EC customer who hasn't configured any name format, is there a possibilty (and if so which one) to check if we have fields where the value is set to Unknown?

Thank you and kind regards
Melanie

Hi @Melli90 ,

If not any name format is configured, we will generate default general display name according to according to message key COMMON_USER_DISPLAYNAME in company default locale, by default the message key is defined as a combination of first name, middle name and last name.

Thanks

Harvey
