Engaged employees  work better, experience less burnout, and stay in organizations longer. Given engagement’s critical importance the three most important levers managers have at their disposal right now to boost their employees’ engagement as highlighted in this HBR article here are to:

(a) help employees connect what they do to what they care about

(b) make the work itself less stressful and more enjoyable, and

(c) reward employees with additional time off, in addition to financial incentives.

Now if we look at the second lever, especially around how to make work more enjoyable, then organizations are increasingly adopting Gamification. Gamification is the process of adding elements of games to non-game activities, such as working or studying. In the workplace, gamification can encourage employee engagement, gratification and retention. Gamification works because it uses positive feedback to increase employee motivation. It’s not always possible to be around to give each worker a pat on the back when they accomplish a task or reach a milestone, but gamification can. Another highlight is it’s ability for breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more easily achievable sections that help employees complete projects and feel rewarded at the end of it.

Gamification done right does provide intellectual stimulation, encouraging increased employee engagement and performance. Team-based gamification has forged stronger bonds between team members. The biggest desire for enabling gamification is to grow the team member’s overall skill set, in a way that is both engaging and that leads to enhanced job satisfaction.

But can Gamification help in reducing attrition? Attrition is costly and to some degree, inevitable. But research shows that 75% of employee turnover is preventable*. How can enterprises turn this statistic into reality?
