Hi Readers,
In this blog, I have explained how to leverage the best of Center of Capabilities and the capability portfolio functionality.
Issue - Many organizations struggle with cataloging the skills and competencies in a systematic way that allows them to record, categorize, evaluate, and search through employees who have specific skills at specific levels.
Scenario - For instance, if a new project is getting started, the organization wants to be able to see who out in their existing talent pool has the skills they need to succeed instead of hiring new full-time talent or contractors. Up until recently, the only way SAP SuccessFactors customers have had to do this is through the employee profile but still, it lacks the rigid structure needed to properly catalog the skills.
SAP offering - As the SAP SuccessFactors product has continued to expand, SAP has set out to solve this problem. SAP’s answer to the problem of how to record, categorize, evaluate, and search through employee skills, and competencies systematically is the Center of Capabilities.
Center of Capabilities
It provides a framework where the skills, competencies, and other similar employee attributes that matter to your organization can be cataloged and assigned to employees. It is a centralized repository known as Capabilities Library to store capabilities.
NOTE: Currently, the supported type of capability is competency.
The center of capability framework consists of two main components
- Capability Library
- Capability Portfolio
Capability Library
It contains a listing of all the capabilities (skills, competencies, etc.) that are important to your organization. The portfolio shows which particular skills, competencies, etc. are assigned to individuals or job roles. Under each library, you can add different categories and groups to organize similar types of competencies together.
Competencies and behaviors
Competencies and behaviors provide structured guidelines that enable the identification, evaluation, and development of behaviors for individual employees. A competency is an individual's ability to perform a job that includes a set of defined behaviors.
We can define a set of behaviors that help to measure a competency. Behaviors help to assess if an individual possesses particular qualities that are required by employers and are used as benchmarks
Capability Portfolio
It displays the competencies and skills assigned to an employee. Each capability includes the rated proficiency levels and the proficiency levels expected for the job role.
Employee View - Employees can view the capabilities assigned to them in their Capabilities Portfolio. In addition, users, such as managers who have the necessary permissions can view the Capabilities Portfolio of other employees from the employee profile. Here you can view the unique capabilities of an employee. Capabilities Portfolio displays the capabilities that are associated with employees' job roles
Managers View - The Employee’s manager can view all the data related to competencies and skills. The main goal behind this Capability Portfolio is the centralization of holistic employee information like skills, competencies, and other workforce data. Managers can refer to this data when making growth opportunity recommendations.
The Capability portfolio can also help in identifying employees who should be upskilled and the teams and projects that have attracted employee interest.
Use case - This helps the company to be able to determine who from their existing talent pool has the necessary abilities to consider for a new project. If two employees possess same set of competencies then the managers/talent team can look into each of their competencies to know more details like proficiency level, and history of ratings over the past years. This way they can compare and choose the best candidate.
The Capability portfolio can also help in identifying employees who should be upskilled and the teams and projects that have attracted employee interest.
Configuration - The Capabilities portfolio is what ties an individual to a set of competencies from the library via their job role. competencies can be accessed via a performance form. Each competency has a proficiency rating scale assigned to them that determines what their scores can be.
Before you can use the portfolio, you’ll have to use the setup configuration in the “Manage Center of Capabilities”. which includes the setup of the rating scale/proficiency levels. You will also need to associate which performance forms will show the proficiency history.
