Let's start by defining our Company Structure, usually we find the Business Unit as the highest level in the hierarchy, followed by the Divisions and the rest of the structure is defined using parent child department relationship.
In this scenario our department object will have 2 associations one to division and another one to parent department.
Because the Company Structure overview relays on the associations to display the structure, the department will be displayed twice, once under the division and another one under the parent department.
Department configuration
Let me show you a workaround to avoid this duplication
1. Add a custom field - division on Department object. this field should be read only
2. We create a Rule triggered on Save on Department object, that automatically populates the data from the standard association field to the new custom_division field in case the Parent department value is null
The custom division field should only be updated in case the Parent Department is not empty
3. Update the Company Structure Overview to display the new field instead of standard association
4. Go to Company Structure Overview and display the results. The Department no longer appear duplicated
5. Position and job info filters to departments will remain the same
Hope this can make your Company Structure easier to set up and maintain
