Migrating to Talent Intelligence Hub (TIH) in SAP SuccessFactors can significantly enhance skills intelligence and workforce planning. However, most issues encountered during TIH migration are data‑related and avoidable. This blog highlights the common migration errors, their root causes, and the recommended resolutions to ensure a smooth and successful TIH implementation.

1. Missing or Incomplete Competency Translations

Error Description
Migration fails or completes with warnings related to missing language information for competencies.

Root Cause

  • Competencies are not maintained in all enabled system languages
  • Competency libraries or categories exist only in the default language

Resolution

  • Ensure competencies, libraries, and categories are maintained in every enabled language

2. Duplicate Competencies in the System

Error Description
Migration throws duplicate object errors or leads to incorrect competency‑to‑role mappings.

Root Cause

  • Same competency created multiple times
  • Legacy data issues from previous implementations

Resolution

  • Consolidate duplicate competencies
  • Ensure each competency exists only once in the system

3. Job Code Mapped to Multiple Roles

Error Description
Incorrect role associations after migration.

Root Cause

  • One job code mapped to multiple roles

Resolution

  • Enforce a one job code → one role mapping

4. Inactive Job Codes During Migration

Error Description
Roles contain inactive job codes, resulting in migration issues.

Root Cause

  • Inactive or obsolete job codes still associated with roles

Resolution

  • Activate all job codes involved in migration or
  • Delimit unused job codes associated with roles

5. Skills Need to Be Removed from the System

Error Description
Migration warnings or inconsistencies related to skills.

Root Cause

  • Skills not removed before taking the migration backup

Resolution

  • Delimit skills associated with roles
  • Delete all skills before migrating to TIH

Reason: Skills do not migrate from JPB to TIH

6. Proficiency Level Scale Is Not Defined

Error Description
Errors reported for undefined proficiency level scales.

Resolution

  • These errors can be safely ignored
  • They do not impact the TIH migration

7. JDM to JPB Migration Not Completed

Error Description
TIH migration fails or results in incomplete data.

Root Cause

  • Incomplete migration from Job Description Manager (JDM) to Job Profile Builder (JPB)

Resolution

  • Ensure JDM → JPB migration is fully completed before starting TIH migration

8. Migration Validation Warnings Ignored

Error Description
Post‑migration issues occur despite successful migration status.

Root Cause

  • Migration validation warnings not reviewed or addressed

Resolution

  • Review all migration logs carefully
  • Address warnings proactively to prevent post‑go‑live issues

9. Mandatory Rectification of Check Tool Errors

All errors reported by the Check Tool must be rectified before proceeding with migration.

  • Some errors can be resolved using Quick Fix
  • Data‑related errors must be corrected manually
  • Migration should proceed only after all blocking errors are resolved

10. Mandatory Backup Before TIH Migration

Before initiating TIH migration, a comprehensive backup must be taken for the following data:

  • Competencies
  • Competencies behavior
  • Roles
  • Families
  • Role–Job Code mapping
  • Role–Competency mapping
  • Role–Competency Behavior mapping

This backup ensures data security, validation, and rollback capability if required.

11. TIH Implementation is Irreversible

Once Talent Intelligence Hub (TIH) is implemented and enabled in the SAP SuccessFactors system, it cannot be reverted to the legacy framework.

Impact

  • TIH enablement is a one‑time, irreversible activity
  • Legacy competency and skills frameworks are permanently replaced
  • Rollback is not supported by SAP

Recommendation

  • Ensure:
    • All pre‑requisites are completed
    • All Check Tool errors are resolved
    • Mandatory backups are taken
  • Perform thorough validation in test environments before enabling TIH in production

Best Practice: Treat TIH enablement as a go‑live milestone, not a configurable feature.

12. Recommendation for New SuccessFactors Implementations

Scenario
For newly implemented or greenfield SuccessFactors systems.

Recommendation

  • It is strongly recommended to implement TIH first
  • Proceed with:
    • Competency & skills creation
    • Competencies and behaviors mappings only after TIH is enabled

Benefits

  • Avoids rework and data cleanup
  • Eliminates migration complexities
  • Ensures all talent data is created directly in the TIH framework

Best Practice:
For new customers, TIH‑first approach simplifies system design and accelerates adoption.

Conclusion

TIH migration and implementation require careful planning, data readiness, and strong governance. Since TIH enablement is irreversible, it is critical to address all migration errors, complete mandatory backups, and validate data thoroughly before proceeding. For new SuccessFactors customers, enabling TIH at the beginning of the implementation journey is the most efficient approach, ensuring a clean and future‑ready talent framework.
