1. Purpose of the document

2. Why SAP SuccessFactors HCM customer needs to migrate from Boomi to SAP Integration Suite

  • Between 2013 and 2016, SAP SuccessFactors HCM customers used BOOMI as an integration platform to support data integration requirements in SAP SuccessFactors HCM implementation, and many customers are still running on Boomi.
  • SAP Customers have significantly invested in SAP BTP and SAP Integration Suite in the last seven years as part of S4HANA transitions and Integration Modernization (moving from SAP PO to SAP IS). 
  • Customers are migrating interfaces from Boomi to the SAP Integration Suite, aligning with the SAP Integration strategy.
  • Maintaining multiple integration platforms adds a lot of Technical Debt, and SAP customers consolidate and move to one integration platform (SAP Integration Suite)

3. SAP Integration Suite Capabilities and Features

SAP Integration Suite (SAP IS) is the strategic integration platform for SAP customers, offering seamless connectivity with over 3,400 prebuilt integrations and 3,800+ APIs. It provides all the capabilities of Boomi and additional advantages such as prepackaged content covering most of the SAP Solutions Integrations, AI-driven integration, and enhanced security. 

SAP Integration Suite is a comprehensive set of tools and services that enable seamless integration across various SAP and third-party systems. It helps businesses connect, automate, and optimize their processes across cloud and on-premises environments. Here are some key features and components of the SAP Integration Suite:

3.1 Key Features:

  • Connectivity: Provides pre-built connectors and adapters for integrating various SAP and third-party applications, such as SAP S/4HANA, SAP SuccessFactors, and external applications like Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Integration Flows: Facilitates the orchestration of data between applications with customizable integration flows, enabling businesses to automate workflows and synchronize data.

3.2 SAP Integration Suite Core Components:

  1. SAP Cloud Integration (CPI): A cloud-based integration platform for connecting SAP and non-SAP applications. It allows seamless integration of cloud and on-premise systems.
  2. SAP API Management: A solution to design, publish, and monitor APIs, providing tools to securely expose and consume APIs.
  3. SAP Open Connectors: A collection of pre-built connectors to a variety of third-party applications and services.
  4. SAP Integration Advisor: A tool that automates the mapping and transformation of data across systems, helping streamline the integration process.
  5. SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP): While the Integration Suite is a part of BTP, it works closely with other BTP services like SAP HANA, SAP AI, and SAP analytics for a comprehensive digital transformation solution.

3.3 SAP Integration Suite Use Cases:

  • ERP Integration: Connect SAP SuccessFactors HCM and SAP S/4HANA with other enterprise systems, such as CRM, Payroll, and Time, Benefits..etc, to ensure a unified view of business operations.
  • Cloud and On-Premises Integration: Link cloud-based applications (e.g., SAP SuccessFactors HCM ) with on-premises systems (e.g., SAP ECC).

4.Boomi to SAP Integration Suite Migration – Tech Envo Framework 

We have worked on multiple Boomi to SAP Integration Suite migration projects and developed a framework and strategy for successful migrations.

4.1 Scope of Boomi Integrations to be migrated to SAP Integration Suite:

This is the first step in the migration process: identifying the number of integrations currently running in the Boomi Production Atom environment and ensuring the scope is determined. 

4.2 Document pain points and current environment: 

Talk to the business and technical team supporting the integrations in the BOOMI environment and get a list of pain points and challenges. This is a critical step, and addressing these issues in the SAP Integration Suite after migration is necessary.

Common pain points : 

  1. Poor Integration design 
  2. Poor Integration coding standards 
  3. Not implementing prepackaged integrations
  4. Customizing prepackaged integrations 
  5. Heavy Groovy scripting
  6. Lack of better error handling mechanisms
  7. Lack of documentation
  8. Not using the correct SAP SuccessFactors APIs
  9. Delta Logic is missing 
  10. No encryption
  11. Authentication type issues 
  12. Tightly coupled interfaces - not easy to make updates.

4.3 Identify Integration Patterns: 

Identity integration patterns like Synchronous, Asynchronous, cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-on-premises, On-premise—on-premise Integration, Scheduled, Real-Time, Type of Systems involved, etc., and create an SAP Integration Suite Integration patterns covering all scenarios. 

  • Synchronous Integration – Real-time data exchange with immediate response—API-to-API communication between SAP SuccessFactors and another system.

4.4 Create Migration Strategy 

  • Create a detailed strategy covering all aspects of migration:
  1. Deployment Approach and Timelines
  2. Prioritization of interfaces
  3. Technical Architecture
  4. Documenting best practices 

4.5 Map Boomi capabilities with SAP Integration Suite

Identify capabilities used in BOOMI and map which capabilities you need to use in IS. This will give a clear picture of gaps in capabilities and how they can be solved, such as connectors used, API management, Scripting, security, Retry mechanism, error logging capabilities, etc. 

Tech Envo's best practices always include using standard capabilities offered by the SAP integration suite and implementation prepacked integration before building custom integrations.  

4.6 Create Technical Architecture / Design and Development standards

Creating a technical design for each interface is critical. The technical design can be reused depending on the integration type and pattern. Create detailed technical design standards and a framework for the topics below. 

  • Development standards
  • Naming conventions
  • Reusable framework / a common framework (reuse of scripts, security materials, etc)
  • Documentation standards and deliverables
  • Interface development life cycle
  • Interface testing 
  • API best practices 

4.7 Integration Build and Testing

Ensure that the integration consultant working on the integration build has the expertise below. This will help build high-quality integrations. 

  • A clear understanding of SAP SuccessFactors HCM APIs 
  • Excellent hands-on experience in the SAP Integration suite 
  • Experience in Integration build for SAP SuccessFactors HCM
  • Able to understand BOOMI integration code (Boomi platform)

Create a detailed development process for all integrations, align on the development approach, and implement leading practices. This will ensure consultants working on the project follow the same standards and help support the interfaces better.

For example, if you are building delta logic for SAP SuccessFactors HCM data extract, ensure this logic can be reusable across interfaces. Usually, we create a reusable Groovy script. Maintaining the code would be less effort if everyone used the same approach.

4.8 Integrations Testing and comparing BOOMI/SAP Integration Suite Outputs. 

Integration testing is a critical phase of the project. Ensure you document all test cases, check if any are available from the Boomi project, and enhance the same with additional cases. Run the integration in the Boomi environment and SAP Integration suite and compare data. If data matches both platforms, logic integration in SAP integration suits and covers all requirements but follows this process for all scenarios. 

4.9 Deployment in SAP Integration Suite Production 

Once the business approves the integration, plan the deployment in the SAP Integration Suite production environment and schedule as required. Un-deploy or stop the Boomi schedule for the interfaces deployed in the SAP IS prod environment. 

5. Boomi to SAP Cloud Integration - Migration High-Level Decision Flow to determine Integration approach 

The primary goal of the below decision is to leverage prepackaged integrations as much as possible before building a custom integration solution. This approach aligns with the recommendation of SAP's leading practices and SAP clean core principles.

  1. We implement direct API-based Direct integrations if the vendor has built integration and is available in the SAP App Center (e.g., Hire Right, Nakisa, JDMS, SailPoint, Omada IDM, Okta, etc.). Direct integrations avoid the middleware layer and reduce development and support costs.
  2. We implement prepackaged integrations developed by SAP, Tech Envo, or Vendor to reduce development effort and customization.
  3.  We use SAP SuccessFactors Integration Center (IC) if the Integration Center integrations require less effort to build and maintain.
  4. We have built reusable integration templates, which we can use if we need to develop a custom integration.

We migrate Boomi legacy SAP S4 HANA, SAP ERP HCM, SAP ECC integrations to the BIB Replication Framework for seamless. Employee and Organizational Data replication. Migration Key Considerations

1.Connectivity

  • The IP address changes for  Boomi data center (Atoms) and SAP IS are different, so the firewall ports and network config must be updated with new IP range details during migration.
  • Server and Client certificates in the on-premise ERP system must also be updated during migration.
  • Any custom integrations built using SuccessFactors SMTP server for sending emails must be changed to a publicly available SMTP server, as SuccessFactors does not allow external access to its SMTP server.
  • Any locally installed atom needs to be changed to use SAP Cloud Connector (SCC)/Edge Integration. SAP Cloud Connector connects on-premise systems with SAP IS without opening tunnels.

2.Instance Strategy:

  • Depending on the license model, SAP provides two tenants (Test and Production) by default, but we recommend using a three-tier architecture.
  • Multi-tier architecture requires an additional SAP IS tenant, which may involve extra costs.

3.Cloud to On-Premise Connectivity

  • On-premise connections via Boomi Local Atom need migration to SAP Cloud Connector or Edge Integration Cell.
  • Proxy tools used in Boomi can still be leveraged in SAP Cloud Integration.

4.Interface Mapping: Existing interfaces need to be evaluated based on the following 4 buckets:

  1. Boomi Pre-Packaged to SAP IS Pre-Packaged /Direct API-based integration 
  2. Boomi custom integration to SAP IS a Pre-Packaged integration 
  3. Boomi Custom Integration to SF Integration Center Integrations
  4. Custom Boomi to Custom SAP Integration Suite 

5.Interface Prioritization

  1. Prioritize high-risk integrations such as Payroll, Time, and Benefits 
  2. Ensure SAP IS generates output with the same logic as Boomi.
  3. Validate output files between Boomi and SAP IS to streamline testing.
