Utilize a Custom Table in Responsive Template

I'd like to modify the UI to highlight certain attribute values (our recommended selections) based on whether they're found in a custom table. But how do I reference a custom table in the Responsive Templates?

I'm just starting to get into APIs - so I conceptually understand, but have zero experience. Could you please give some advice on how to do this - maybe some example code? I'd really appreciate it, and I think it might be useful for others reading this.
