When trying to make changes the error "Usage indicator cannot be of EXCLUSIVE_USAGE for the periods when area is 0" pops up. What does it mean and how is it corrected?

The error indicates a business rule violation. It can be resolved by

1. giving the space an area for its entire validity or
2. changing its Usage Classification to either "Common Usage" or "Not Usable" for its entire validity.
