Upgrade from SEM-BPS to BPC 10.1 Unified

Hi All,

Currently we are in BW 7.3 and still using BW-BPS for planning. We have started to move to BW-IP and ultimately want to see what SAP's road map is for planning tools and want to move towards it. please note that we don't have consolidation . so no use of account based modelling.

So this is our Current road map : BW BPS -> BW-IP( in progress)  -> BW- PAK ( after we implement HANA) -> BPS 10.1 (Unified model).

I found lot of great blogs on the net but I've some detail questions on modelling and reporting. Hope someone can help me with these questions:

1) The main reason we rejected moving to BPC previously was interfacing between BPC and BW.

          i) Build new model in BPC and move the transactional and master data into BPC .

ii) and again move the plan data to BW to do reporting.

do we still need to do that with BPC 10.1 Unified?.

2) The main reports we have are based on actual and plan data. so, we need to have this readily available all the time for reporting. can we do that reporting using BPC?. meaning can the BPC reports run directly on Multi-provider?

3) when a user plans in BPC 10.1 EPM excel addin . Is the data saved back into BW cubes when he clicks on save button?

any pointers are appreciated.

Regards,

Satish M

Hi Satish M,

please read the blog

http://scn.sap.com/community/data-warehousing/business-planning/blog/2013/12/23/unifying-bpc-nw-and-...

I think there all of the above questions are answered. For you convenience here are short answers:

1) BPC embedded (unified is the old name) uses BW-IP/PAP planning engine, thus you don't have to copy/adjust BW objects to BPC; this is one main reason why BPC embedded exists.

2) In BPC embedded is just part of BW; you can do reporting on a kinds of InfoProviders existing in BW. It depends on our requirements what client you want to use, e.g. EPM Add In, Analysis Office (AO), Design Studio, Web Templates.

3) Yes, using input-ready queries in EPM Add-In and BPC embedded (as all other clients that support BPC embedded) write data to planning enabled InfoProviders (e.g. InfoCubes, planning enabled DataStore-Objects, ...).

Gregor

Hi,

In my opinion you also need to consider what your client will need in future.

"No consolidation" doesn't mean they will not have consolidation in future.

"1) The main reason we rejected moving to BPC previously was interfacing between BPC and BW.

ii) and again move the plan data to BW to do reporting."

This may not be entirely correct for BPC.  EPM Reporting in integral part of BPC and you don't need to move data back to do reporting.

10.1 Unified model looks a logical progression for you. Most of the objects developed in IP can be re-used in Embedded Model.

You also need to check client's HANA strategy.  Check out option for Simple Finance and Integrated Business Planning(IBP). IBP is latest & Greatest offering from SAP and it can bring lot of value to client specially if  they are only doing planning.
