Unexpected Exchange Rate Difference and Zero-Balance Clearing Entries During Payment Clearing

Hello SAP Community,

I'm encountering an issue while clearing a customer open item in foreign currency (SGD). The original invoice was posted at an exchange rate of 1 SGD = 20,000 VND, totaling 612,000 VND (equivalent to 30.60 SGD). The customer payment was received at a different exchange rate, resulting in a payment amount of 29.38 SGD.

Upon clearing the open item, SAP generated the following journal entries:

i have some questions here:

  • Why is there both an exchange gain and loss recorded in this clearing?

  • Why is the exchange gain (29.06) and loss (30.28) split this way, while the actual payment received was 29.38?
The difference between gain/loss and the actual payment doesn't reconcile intuitively.

  • Where does the 0.32 SGD figure come from?
Why is it not part of the exchange gain or loss but instead sent to the Zero Balance Clearing account?

  • Why doesn’t the system record the full exchange rate difference (between 30.60 and 29.38) as either gain or loss?

  • Could this behavior be influenced by document splitting, rounding logic, or exchange rate type configuration?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Andromeda

Hello dear user,

And thanks for the detail.

That's the main reason why you get the exchange difference in my opinion.

To make sure it comes from it, could you please provide a screenshot of the two rates echanges configured and also the two header of your documents (in private message if you don't want to show it there)?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hello dear user,

And thank you for asking your question in the SAP Community blog.

In order to analyse your issue, could you please provide the following information :

- when the customer invoice has been created ?

- what is the effective date of payment ?

- I'm supposing you're working on S4 Hana Public Cloud version. Could you please confirm it ?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

I created the customer invoice and posted the payment on the same day.

And yes, I am working in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud.

Let me know if you need any further details.

Best regards,
Andromeda

Hi Jeremy,

For more information, the difference in exchange rates occurred because I set two different exchange rates: one exchange rate was set when creating the Sales Order, and the other was set when posting the incoming payment.

Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Best regards,

Andromeda
