Dear SAP colleagues,
we have the problem, that the output format for SAP.GTS external product number is different from the format of some of the feeder systems. In the feeder systems product numbers can be defined with different numbers of leading 0s, in SAP.GTS leading 0s are always cut off, even for external product numbers.
There is a customizing in SAP.GTS at SPRO > GTS > General Settings > Define Output Format for external product number which can be changed to "Show leading zeros". Unfortunately it is not maintainable in development system. It needs to be defined in each client according to the documentation, but only error message "No changes allowed; products still exists" appears. Same message appears when I try to change customizing through SM30.
Therefore my question: Is there a way to distinguish external product numbers by leading 0s? E.g. 0070 differs from 00070?
And: If the mentioned customizing would help: how can we maintain it?
Request clarification before answering.
Hi Alex,
That setting needs to be changed BEFORE you create any Products.
Best way forward will be to ask your Basis team to create a new temporary Sandbox system, make the setting, and then check operation with your feeder system. If it works ok, then re-build your system (yes, I know; easier said than done!).

Dave

Did you try transaction OMSL?. It should be in sync with Feeder System.

Hello Alexander,
With your current settings, it is not possible to differentiate between material 07 & 007. If you transfer 07 from ERP, GTS will show material 7. If you now transfer 007, it will simply update the same material 7. We had the same "bad" setting and had to overcome by writing custom program to update the material number in GTS table /SAPSLL/PNTPR.

Hello Alexander,
See David's answer. When connecting two SAP systems, this setting is critical for material number replications and processing.

Hello Alexander,
Is 'Save Lexicographically' set?
