Report download to Excel and special characters

I download a vendor report into excel. The vendor name contains a 'special' character - an acute accent over the 'e' in the name. Québec- the report shows the name in excel, for me, as it should, however for another user the name shows as Québec.  Any ideas on how to rectify this??

Have you created a real Excel file or a plain text file with an Excel extension (check with Notepad++)? In the latter case, I would guess that you and the other user don't share the same character set.

Please provide more information about the report type and the tool used to export/convert it.

I think it's ANSII (sorry I'm such a technical neophyte) can a user change their character set somehow? Is this an excel thing? Maybe I can shift this to someone else to solve!! lol

Consider Unicode UTF-8 or more, or at- least ISO-8859  (most commonly Windows Latin 1), as good old ANSI (Code page 437) doesn't handle most accented characters as "é" of "Québec" in your case it was unable to convert a 2 byte character.
