Packaging Units of Measure

Hello All,

We are in the process of filing directly with ACE (US). However, I am having difficulty with the Packaging Unit of Measure. Currently, the Customs Code list from SAP seems to have everything, but Pallet. I have reviewed Appendix N from the CBP AESTIR Website and it contains more codes than the list provided by SAP.

So, where can I find the official list of Packaging Units of Measure from CBP in order to determine the status of a code for Pallet?

Also, I find that the Import Manifest uses 3-character codes which is different from the 2-character Export. But SAP says that the same code list is used for both import/export. Is it because the unit of measure is an optional field and is not validated in the Entry Summary Create/Update?

Thank you in advance,

Regards, Dean.

Hi Dean,

In case it helps, I found this "Valid Codes" appendix on the CBP site.

It contains more codes than the standard GTS list. GTS appears to have all of the 2-character codes related to packaging, but none of the 3-character codes - for example, 'CAG' 'CON', 'CYL', etc. Those latter codes are generally marked with an asterisk to indicate that they are different from the ACS version, so maybe the GTS list is just a little out-of-date - in that case, you should be able to adjust the configured list to match the latest requirements. Pallet shows up in this list as 'PAL', and interestingly that one is NOT asterisked, suggesting that it's not new. Perhaps if the export codes are/were 2-characters, SAP left it out to avoid confusion or technical errors?

Hope that helps?

Regards,
Dave

I see.... so I will use PAL and we'll go from there. It's sad that SAP cannot come out and be forward with answering questions like this one.

Thank you, Dave.

Hello Dave,

For Unit of Measure, yep, but not packaging types as per the Packaging tab in Exports and Import Declarations.

SAP tells me this...

"US AES message uses two digits for packaging types. Within customs code list for ACE, you can find two digit code list.

Within US import message, according to message implemention guide of 'Entry Summary Create/Update' there is no field available for filling package description."

SAP continues...

" Within that CATAIR there is no link to Appendix N for ACE. As a consequence, there is no need for three digits package types in SAP GTS customs code list because within import this data set is not filled."

So, it seems that SAP decided to use the code list for exports for imports. However, these is a Manifest Entry for Imports. I see Equipment Description Codes (2-character), but based on the list from SAP, I don't see codes list 'AE' - Aerosol in the Equipment Description codes. I looked in AESTIR Appendices as well.

So, I am at a loss here.
