Moving to a New Cost Center – How to Update Master Data for Assets, WBS, etc.?

We are in the process of transitioning from an existing (old) cost center to a new cost center structure within our SAP environment. Our objective is to update all relevant master data objects impacted by this change to ensure consistency and accuracy across our system.

Our Scenario:

  • Current Situation:
Our old cost center is integrated with various master data objects (including cost center hierarchies, Profitability Analysis (CO-PA), internal orders, budgeting reports, and asset accounting). The need to replace it with a new cost center has arisen due to organizational restructuring.

  • Goal:
Seamlessly replace the old cost center with the new one across all master data, ensuring that all dependencies, historical data, and reporting functionalities remain intact

Our Key Questions:

  1. Migration Process:

    • What is the recommended process for updating cost center master data from an old to a new cost center?
    • Are there specific SAP tools, transactions, or methodologies (e.g., LSMW, batch input, BAPIs) that can automate or streamline this process?
  2. Impact on Linked Objects:

    • How should we approach updating cost center references in related areas such as CO-PA segments, internal orders, asset accounting, and other integrated modules?
    • What potential pitfalls should we be aware of when updating these interconnected master data objects?
  3. Handling Historical Data:
  • What considerations should we take into account regarding historical data that may still reference the old cost center?
  • Is there a need to maintain a linkage or mapping for audit purposes, or should historical data be updated as well?

Any insights, experiences, or detailed recommendations you could share would be invaluable as we plan this transition.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!
