Functional area derived from cost center category?

Hello Experts,

I hope you're doing well.

I’m currently in the process of migrating cost centers to SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, and I have a question regarding the Functional Area field in the migration template. Since functional areas are already derived from cost center categories, what is the purpose of specifying them separately in the template?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Hello Wayne,

Yes, that’s correct - the parameters defined in the Cost Center Category configuration are used only as default values for the Cost Center Master Data.

This means that if you don’t fill in the Functional Area in the migration template (or in the Fiori app), the system will take it from the Cost Center Category. However, if you explicitly maintain a Functional Area in the migration template or Fiori app, that manually entered value will override the default from the category.

Apart from the Functional Area, the same logic applies to other parameters defined in the Cost Center Category, such as:

  •
  • Whether cost centers of this category can record consumption quantities

  • Whether you can post actual primary/secondary costs and/or revenues

  • Whether commitments are recorded

and so on

Best regards,
Diana

Dear,

The field functional area is also available in Fiori app Manage Cost Centers.

so the field exists for both migration template and Fiori app is that it offers more flexibility for functional areas derivation.

Functional areas can be derived:

1. from G/L Accounts,

2.Manual input from Post General Journal Entries

3. Cost Center Master data

4.Cost Center Categories.

Regards,

Sen

Hello Sen,

Thank you for your response! I now understand that functional areas can be derived from multiple sources, including cost center categories, G/L accounts, manual journal entries, and cost center master data.

I have a follow-up question: If I explicitly enter a functional area in the migration template, will it override the one derived from the cost center category? Or does SAP follow a specific priority hierarchy when determining the final functional area assignment?

I’d really appreciate any insights on this to ensure correct data migration.

Looking forward to your response.
