Document splitting at profit center level

We are able to see this node "Document Splitting Characteristic for General Ledgers " in CBC but the tick box for Zero balance is still greyed out.

SAP Help Portal: Document Splitting Characteristics

Changes to the Profit Center characteristic are possible only if no journal entries exist in the production system.
Here, you can only select the Mandatory check box. However, the Zero Balance check box will automatically be selected when you save your changes.

So it's standard system behavior.
