BPC MS or NW

Hi,

We are going to carry out a migration from an MS 7.5 version to a 10.1 or perhaps an 11.0 version, but our client insists on continuing using the MS version, even having SAP ECC on their systems. We are trying to find clear and concise documentation from SAP where the need / recommendation to implement NW versions is emphasized, since from version 11.0 perhaps no more BPC will be developed that support MS version (perhaps, we are not sure on this...), and surely in the long term, there is no choice than migrate to NW.

We know differences between NW and MS, and we can give them some feedback about the negative aspects on keep going on a MS version, but i'm looking for more info/papers/documentation/notes from SAP.

If someone has information about it, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

totally there are five versions of BPC that are currently available in the market and customers should choose a suitable version according to their existing infrastructure and planning needs. If customers do not have the SAP platform or a matured SAP platform, it is advisable for them to use SAP BPC 10.1 for Microsoft. If customers have a mature BW system running on HANA, they should go for SAP BPC 10.1 NW Embedded. And if the existing BW system is not running on HANA, SAP BPC 10.1 NW Standard would be an ideal choice. If the customers have S/4 HANA, SAP BPC Optimized for S/4HANA would be the right choice. If the customers have deployed BW/4HANA to harvest the benefits such as high performance in-memory processing, SQL based enterprise data warehouse (EDW), the latest user interfaces and simplified data structures, they should go for SAP BPC 11.0 for BW/4HANA.

Hello,

BPC11 uses BW4HANA, as far as I know BW4HANA and HANA are not optional. As of now all of our training for BPC includes BW4HANA and HANA. Therefore, if your client wishes to continue migration/upgrade to BPC11 I think there is only one choice and that is BPC NW.

Hi,

Thanks for the answer Leila.

As an SAP worker, I am concerned that you are not sure if BPC 11.0 only works in NW, If SAP doesn't know, imagine me...

The same doubt that you have, is the one that I'm trying to solve. I can not go to a demonstration on a client and say, I think, maybe... I need something from the software developer that make a clear recommendation on what to do.

Best Regards¡

Jose.

Some common sense point:

Migration from 7.5 to 1X will require complete redesign of all reports and input forms - huge project!

For the rest there is a tool to migrate MS 7.5 to NW 7.5 (ask SAP). Then you can migrate NW 7.5 to NW 1X

Hi Vadim,

Thanks for the answer.

I didn't know about an standard program to migrate MS 7.5 to nw 7.5, i will check it... I only knew the other standard programs on NW side, (SE38 - UJT_MIGRATE_xx_TO_xx).

The point here is that we know, as a BPC consultant, that the key here is to migrate to NW, but we do not have any SAP paper / document that clarifies this case and is what I need to teach the client, something that comes from SAP (as the software developer) that says clearly it does not make sense to continue carrying out projects under MS version (the same happens for the BW-IP), besides that they have SAP ECC...

Regards.

"I didn't know about an standard program to migrate MS 7.5 to nw 7.5, i will check it.." - it's not publicly available, you have to request SAP.

For the rest - it depends on customer requirements.

"even having SAP ECC on their systems" - do they have HANA? BPC11 is working only on HANA. If the customer don't have HANA then it may have financial impact...

Hi Vadim,

No they don't have HANA and of course thinking on BPC 11 could have financial impact without HANA. But with my phrase "even having SAP ECC in their systems" I wanted to argue the clear possibility of migrating directly to an NW instead of an MS from my opinion, and this is what i'm going to argue to our client. But i know that they will ask about SAP opinion, their recomendation, this is what i'm looking for...

I'm still surprised that in this sense, often SAP is not clear and concise, from my point of view it is quite clear and it is easily defensible, but having an argument from the software developer would make it easier for us to position one or the other version.

Thanks a lot Vadim.

There is no 100% clear answer 🙂 For sure SAP want to sell HANA, so...

From another point of view migration to BPC MS 10 can be a cost effective solution if the performance of the existing BPC MS 7.5 is fine.

"From another point of view migration to BPC MS 10 can be a cost effective solution if the performance of the existing BPC MS 7.5 is fine." I don't think so if you are thinking on a Medium long term.

As I see, SAP is not going to improve MS or BW-IP, everything seems to tend towards SAP BW/HANA. There will come a time when customers who have MS versions, are forced to migrate to an NW for a simple matter of lack of maintenance by SAP, and apparently that date is not far away. There will come a time when customers who have MS versions, are forced to migrate to an NW for a simple matter of lack of maintenance by SAP, and apparently that date is not far away. Thinking about this, maybe it does not come out that cheap 😉

But it's hard to predict time when "customers who have MS versions, are forced to migrate to an NW"

May be it will take 5 years 🙂
