BPC Data Migration Approach

Hi Experts,

Can you please help me on the Data migration approach from One Environment to another Environment? My IDEA is to transfer the data using Cube to Cube extraction at BI Back end.

Example: I have Environment 1 and Model 1 and I would like to transfer the data from Model in Environment 1 to Model 2 in Environment 2.0. In between both the Models, I planned to create an Intermediate cube in BI (Copy of Model 2) because the data will change for certain fields from Model 1 to Model 2. So, I want to do all the transformations between Model 1 and Intermediate Cube and 1:1 mapping between Intermediate cube and Model 2.0. Please see the screenshot of my plan below;

My Question is;

1. BPC models 1 and 2 will be collected using Transport connection in BI using BPC Transport procedure and would be transported across the landscape, whereas I cannot collect the Transformations using BPC transport procedure. I would like to check with you if I can collect the Transformations separately using BI Transport procedures and Transport to next Landscape if it would work? I would like to check on the Transports to next landscapes especially regarding the Transformations.

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Venkata

Hi Venkata,

Yes, you can collect BW transformations in a separate request. You just have to make sure that you have same BPC cube names across the landscape.

Also, you can load from Intermediate cube to Model 2 using BPC DM Package. Then you don't have to switch Mode of the cube.

Question is: are your transformations so complex that you can't build then directly from Model 1 to Model 2?

Hi Gersh,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

1. The Transformations are not so complex but the main reason I would like to go for an Intermediate cube is because there are 2 teams working together in Parallel i.e. on the Planning and other on Data Migration. For Data Migration since we have to write some routines where we would spend some time and if we switch the Model, then the planning team would get affected.

2. I have a question on the Intermediate cube please. I would like to copy the Model 2.0 and use it as Intermediate cube so that it would be very easy for me to map Intermediate and Model 2.0 later. My question would be is this recommended or should I create a cube which does not contain /CPMB/XXXXX? Additional update: I would like to copy Model 2.0 in the backend and not at the Front end of BPC and use it as an Intermediate cube.

3. Also, please let me know when I Transport the Transformations across the Landscape, should I switch the BPC data models to "Real time data target Can be loaded; Planning not allowed" or that shouldn't matter?

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Venkata

Hi Venkata,

1. Two teams can design concurrently if they don't change Model structure. See 3. below.

2. I doubt there are any "recommendations" in that case, but I don't see why your approach won't work.

3. You have to switch load mode of the cube only before you start loading and switch it back after load is done.

Hi Gersh,

1. As suggested, I will remove the Intermediate cube and create a Transformation between Model 1 and Model 2. I feel this should be fine as well.

2. Ok. Since I will not be using the Intermediate cube, the option 2 in your post above can be ignored.

3. Ok great, That should be fine then. I will change the load behavior during Loading.

Thanks once again for your great Support.

Best Regards,

Venkata

Hi Experts,

I just got an idea like I can remove the Transformation from Intermediate Cube to Model 2 and use BPC DM functionality i.e. use "Load Data From BW Info Provider - UI".

Any idea if transformation would work from Model 1 to Intermediate Cube?

Thanks in advance,
