In nutshell, BPC standard is highly optimized for consolidation calculations and BPC embedded is highly integrated with IP planning and until recently was lacking consolidation.
From technical stand point BPC standard is an add on on top of BW which means everything in BPC standard is designed and implemented a specific way, in some way you can liken it to a set of highly customized BW infoObjects that related to each other in a specific way.
