Since SAP NetWeaver 7.0, SAP BW is automatically included in ERP systems: this is what we call the “Embedded BW” technology.

Now, the logical question which comes from customers having both BPC and an SAP ERP system is “can I use the Embedded BW from my SAP Business suite or SAP S/4 HANA for storing the BPC data?”.

Luckily, the answer is yes, you can leverage the Embedded BW… but with data volume restriction.

The general rule of thumb is that BPC data volume must be low compared to the overall data volume.

To be more specific, we recommend that the total amount of data persisted in the Embedded BW does not exceed 20% of the overall data volume of the system.

By data persisted in Embedded BW, we mean:

  • extractions from your SAP system,

  • data from external applications you might need for BPC,

  • data generated by the planning application itself.

In other words, an Embedded BW should not extensively be used as an Enterprise Data Wareouse to consolidate multiple external systems. The data persisted in Embedded BW should focus on the ERP which is running on the same server, same for the Planning Processes by BPC.
