The year is 1984 (no, not in Orwell’s dystopian world) and so many good movies were showing at the cinema: Ghostbusters, Once Upon a Time in America, Dune, Gremlins, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... And The Terminator which seemed a lot lest close to reality than today with the advances of AI...

Going back to more joyful things, we blasted music from our Vinyl disks, including Wham!’s December release of it snow classic “Last Christmas” song.

What better occasion to commemorate the 40 years anniversary of its release, than to use it as a soundtrack for our famous – well, not nearly as much as those movies or the song but getting there – GRC Christmas tunes?

So, get your dancing shoes on, open YouTube if you need the beat since Vinyls are now long gone, put the sound up on your computer and let’s get this party started!

Background:

The day is Tuesday 17th of December 2024, and our singing hero is about to log off for the holidays and is reminiscing about her shortcomings during the year when it comes to controls checks, risk assessments, or following data protection guidelines.

Last Christmas, I thought I’d play smart,

Approve suppliers to pay, to keep them away,

Next year, to stay in the clear,

I’ll make the checks more substantial.

Next year, when audit re-starts,

I don’t want to stress out, and be ready to say (be ready to say),

My friends, there’s no need to fear,

I’ve reviewed invoices, it’s fine! (it’s fine)

Once wrong, and don’t deny,

How this could have turned, way more dire,

If there’d be a sanction’d party,

Well, I’m lucky it wasn’t.. but gee...

Happy Christmas!

Compliance wrote like a tweet.

With a note saying: we got you, and mean it!

Now with control monit’ring,

Detection patterns know-how,

You know you can now be Zen!

Last Christmas, I assessed with a dart,

On map where it’d stay... I know it’s cliché...

This year, I swear I’ll adhere,

Be ethic and act less casual.

This Christmas, I’ll be state of the art,

Won’t just do it midway, I promise I’ll play.

Next Year, I’ll be volunteer,

And act in all way exemplar (exemplar).

Oh... Well... Maybe!

Not doom’d, becoming more wise,

I won’t hide, or just roll the proverbial dice.

My colleagues will know I can be relied on.

Me? I guess it’s time I start the prevention.

It’s not just a cover, in organization chart,

I’m taking our security home to safe port!

Ooh, ooh, I need to rise above,

Won’t catch me off guard again.

Last Christmas, I let down my guard,

Shared my password most days, or left on display.

Next year it will disappear.

As this was far from ideal (ideal).

Last Christmas, didn’t mind the alerts,

Left mitigations to play, especially on Friday

When attacks breached our frontiers,

Lost things that were confidential.

‘coz there’re no buffer

Danger lurks from all the parts (from all the parts)!

No more looking over, it’s not for the faintheart.

For sure next year,

GRC will become one, will become a process vital,

Crucial!

The one!

I hope you enjoyed this last GRC Tuesdays post of the year. Thank you for following us once again in 2024, reading, sharing and commenting on these blogs and I sincerely hope you will continue to do so in 2025.

Excellent Thomas, thanks again for a fun look at our world!

I wonder if Karaoke clubs will pick on the lyrics as an alternative....
