'Work duration' in service product master

Hello there

Does anyone know what the 'Work duration' field does in the service product master?

I have a requirement to default the number of hours into a service order, so wanted to check if this can help.

I tried testing it but it didn't appear to do anything so wanted to check what it's function is.

Cheers!

Hi gavinrugg

field "work duration" is used to calculate the duration. For example, if you define 3 hours of work in your service order system calculates 6 hours as Duration. You can display this calculation in the detail of the service item. Look at my pic.

Duration is very important during confirmation. System will create the activity posting with the hours defined in this field. In this case, system will post 6 hours not 3.

Regarding your question : is there anyway to set the default number of hours into a service order ? Nothing that I know....However, next version CE 2011 will provide a very useful functionality : service order template. You can create quickly your service orders using a template with data by default.

Hope this helps you

Hi silvia.ventura

Thanks for replying. I thought it would update the actual duration but that didn't work when I tried in our system, which made me raise this question! I'll try it again in case I made an incorrect step somewhere.

And yes definitely looking forward to service order templates, that is going to be a big improvement and will solve a few requirements for us I think!

Cheers

Hi gavinrugg ,

please keep in mind that the duration is "only" used for iternal analysis of the average service duration and does not affect the billing amount. The billing amount is calculated based on the "quantity" which is specified in the service order and/or service confirmation.

Best,

Julius

Hi silvia.ventura juliusenglert

I did a test in our system by setting a work duration of 2.0 hours against a product. When I created the confirmation, the actual duration is defaulted as 1.0 hours and didn't pick up the 2.0 hours. Is there anything else I need to do for this to be picked up and transferred to the confirmation?

Cheers

Gavin

Hi Gavin

it sounds weird...Create a fully new service order with your product. Check in the service if the duration is calculated...Maybe you created a confirmation from an order created before you updated the product.

Create it again and let us know your result.
