Whether to use EWM function?

Before entering the topic, below lists the current warehouse management situation in customer:

1.       All the stock are managed on the level of box or container; all movement history will be based on this level. Box might be split into several small ones or repacked.

2.       Our customer here have 2-level material staging model, as they have a separate outside warehouse besides the inner warehouse in factory.

In outside warehouse, thousands of storage bins are set in current system. Only one location is set in inner W/H.

3.The major process:

-Incoming goods receipt:  vendor print box labels, with barcode on each box, at their site before shipment. When the goods arrived, warehouse staff scan the barcode of each box and validate the box number and quantity.

-Material staging:  based on a report (preset minimum stock in each location), the first step is  warehouse staff move stock from outside warehouse to inner warehouse, the second step is to move stock from inner warehouse to shop floor location.

Major issue if using EWM function:

1.    Whether to use HU. We'd like to use handling unit(HU) to manage the stock as to the requirement of box-level inventory movement. By checking  best practice scope of items and SAP help document, we didn't find any related documents except EWM function. In my understanding, HU can be also used without EWM solution. Could you please to confirm if necessary to use EWM solution if we need to use HU function?

2.       As the label of box is printed by vendor,  through EDI, an inbound delivery is created with labels number(HUs) included. If EWM function activated, the inbound delivery will be distributed to EWM. Does SAP provide any APIs to create HUs at the time of inbound delivery creation? or APIs to change EWM inbound delivery, like the APP "Change Inbound Delivery -Deliveries" ? We have searched in API list and didn't find such one.

3.       Goods issue to cost center in EWM. In EWM best practice, we didn't find a scope of item to deal with this scenario. We'd like to know how does SAP EWM solution support this scenario?

4.       As currently multiple boxes(HUs) exist in same storage location, but after checking configuration we find only four storage types are supported( three doesn't support mix HUs and the only one "General storage" allow multiple HUs but it has only one bin.  Does SAP expert configuration support to help configure a new storage type which allows both mixed HUs and several bins ?

5.        In the case of stock transfer between bins, warehouse staff need to scan box number and scan destination bin barcode. If we want to develop this function in scanner,  we need one API to create warehouse task. After searching in API.SAP.COM, such API does not exist. Will SAP provide this in the near future?

6.       In the scenario of purchasing  from overseas supplier, and the inco term is EXW, SAP used to have the solution called origin acceptance, with the use of movement type 107 plus 109. The "origin accept "indicator usually exist in PO/SA item. We can't find this indicator in S4 cloud. Is it possible to make this indicator displayed in SA or PO? Does SAP cloud  have any best practice solution for this scenario? And combined with EWM solution, how to post inbound delivery with movement type "109' ?

If not using EWM function:

If we can't use EWM due to above issues, the only solution to manage the box-level stock we can figure out is to use batch management. Any advice from SAP side?

Furthermore, customer need to use quality management in IQC process, which means box-level inspection lots will be created if using batch solution, which causes a lot workload for quality technician. So our solution is to use a general batch number when posting goods receipt (movement type '101') and then do a batch transfer ( movement type '311') to handle this issue. From our side, the solution doesn't fit to the standard design of batch management. Is there any good advice from SAP side if without EWM function or HU functionality?

Dear Eric,

please find some answers to your questions. All these answers are in line with current release 1908. This may change in future releases. For planning of future releases please refer to the official S/4HANA Cloud Roamap. In case of Go-Live critical Requirements, please reach out to you SAP Point of contact.

1. Handling Units are currently available for EWM in S/4HANA Cloud. Logistics general and Logistics Execution are currently not supporting HU Functionality.

2. Currently Handling Units are not supported in LO/LE (refer question 1). The EDI message is sent to LE- Delivery and this one does not support Handling Units as per current release 1908. This may change in future releases, for more information please refer to official roadmaps. To answer your questionyou need to create these HUs manually in Inbound Delivery Order within EWM.

3. Please refer to scope Items 3BU or 3BT

4. Storage Types can be copied and customized. More information in the Set-up guide of Warehouse Management on Activate Roadmap Viewer.

5. Creation of Ad hoc Warehouse Tasks is currently not available. API for confirming Warehouse Tasks is available and can be consumed by a mobile device.

6. Unfortunately I am not an expert in Origin Acceptance functionality.

For Quality Management in EWM, please refer to Scope Item Quality Management in Warehousing (3M0).

Best regards,

Daniel
