What is the difference create user and create technical user?

Hi,
I know its an old thread, but I was looking answer for this question myself and found the below.

Background on the Buttons :
Most SAP users are familiar with the "Create User" button in transaction SU01, which has long been used to create user IDs in SAP systems. However, in S/4HANA systems starting from version 1909 (SAP Basis 7.54), you’ll notice a new button labeled "Create Technical User." This option becomes available once the new identity model is activated in the client—something that happens automatically during installation or upgrade in S/4HANA systems.

So What Is a Technical User?
SAP has provided limited documentation on this feature. The 2 official resources i found says this -

"A technical user is a type of user account that is typically used for system-to-system communication, batch jobs, or other automated processes."
(Source: SAP Help Portal)

"A technical user does not have any address data. Use the corresponding field on the 'Documentation' tab for the description."
(Source: SAP system F1 documentation)

What do I think about the button?
In my view, the "Create Technical User" functionality currently offers no practical advantages over existing "Create User" option. In fact, it has several limitations:

  • No option to maintain email addresses, which affects traceability, ownership and accountability. (Specially true, If the documentation section in SU01 isn’t properly maintained. Which, lets be honest never is.)
  • Cannot be used effectively in workflows where email or user name is mandatory.(for example GRC workflow user)
  • Probably will never support SSO (Single Sign-On) scenarios.

These constraints make this user type impractical for most use cases as of now. SAP may have future plans for this user type—possibly in the context of licensing, SAP BTP, or IAG (Identity Access Governance)—the current implementation lacks clarity and utility.

Given the limited documentation and functionality, I suggest avoiding the "Create Technical User" option for now, unless specifically required by SAP guidelines or future enhancements.

Edit: Whatever i mentioned above is in the context of S/4HANA Private edition(on premise). As one of the comments mentions, looks like this "Technical User" has use in the public edition version of S/4HANA.

Adding some information on the topic.

At Authorization Concept for Technical Users | SAP Help Portal  the text is self explanatory.
