What is difference between material type and material group?

Can anybody tell me what is difference between material type and material group?

Hi,

Material type is the division of material for the purpose of account determination

e.g.Raw,semi finish,finish

Material group is the grouping of material having common attributes

e.g.Electrical parts,mechanical parts etc

All materials must be assigned to a material type which determines:

Whether the material is intended for a specific purpose such as a configurable material or process material

Whether the material number can be assigned internally or externally

The number range from which the material number is drawn

Which screens appear and in what sequence

Which user department data you may enter

What procurement type the material has; that is, whether it is manufactured in-house or procured externally, or both.

Material group

Key that you use to group together several materials or services with the same attributes, and to assign them to a particular material group.

Use

You can use material groups to:

Restrict the scope of analyses

Search specifically for material master records via search helps

The material group (base material group) is the level in the material group hierarchy which must be assigned directly to a material when it is created. It is defined across the corporate group and sub-divides the complete material assortment from a business management viewpoint.

Those material groups which themselves comprise material groups are called material group hierarchy levels. A hierarchy level can have one or more other hierarchy levels (material groups) assigned to it.

By structuring/linking material groups and material group hierarchy levels in a meaningful way you create the material group hierarchy.

Complementing the last post, I'd say that the material type is the basic differenciator for materials. You can make the fields/folders of the material type different from each other.

You can differenciate materials with/without value or stock from material type.

Material group is just an indicative differenciator, but valuable when you want to set a release stategy, for example. Or even a report.

hi,

material type clearly explains about the type of material which it belongs,

for eg we can call a fan as a finished product i.e FERT

iron ore as a raw material i.e ROH

phones as trading goods i.e HAWA

iron rod we can treat as semi finished until unless it is used to make some finished product (HALB).

these are some of the material types.

material group is the combination of same types of material which belongs to same .

for eg all lugs ,cables, electrical accessories belongs to electrical groups.

and we can create a new group for services and what ever services we are procuring we can treat them in to services group.

Material Type

Material Type is the basic classification in SAP

While creating Material Master it is classified based on the

material type like example

ROH -Raw Material

HALB- Semifinshed Product

FERT -Finished Product

Material Group : It is a classification based on the buyer procurement like Casting ,Forgings ,Sheet Metals, Fasteners,

Bough out compnents etc,

While creating Material Master this Material Group is made
