What controls Default Setting for MARA-SLED_BBD?

I've been doing a lot of research trying to figure what controls the setting for the MARA-SLED_BBD date and I found the following posting that said the following

"The MARA-SLED_BBD field is defaulted with the value B automatically when the general plant data and storage views are created (Maintenance status L). It is simply a default value. The field only controls whether in the batch management the shelf life expiration date or the expiration date can be specified"

I've confirmed that the value gets set to B (Expiration Date) in our system by default when I create the Plant Data/Storage views but what I can't figure out is how the field ever gets set to E (Shelf Life Expiration Date). Is the default controlled by something in configuration? I thought perhaps when I added the Total Shelf Life to the material master and got the message "The Date of Production Must Be Entered in the Goods Receipt" that perhaps that would se it to E but that doesn't change the fact that it always defaults to B.

Also if someone has a good explanation for the difference between Expiration Date and Shelf Life Expiration Date I'd really appreciate it. I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two.

Thanks in advance,

Darrell

Hello, I believe Note 1930372 - The fields "Period Indicator for SLED" and "Expiration Date' default automatically when creating the Plant Data / Storage View in the Product Master might be helpful. Specifically, to change the default behavior, it recommends: You can change this default value by implementing your own logic in BAdI BADI_MATERIAL_REF. Depending on your business needs you may use method REFERENZ_BEFORE, REFERENZ or REFERENZ_AFTER to fill MARA-SLED_BBD or leave initial.

I hope this helps.
