Hi
I am aware of Planning mode 1,2 and 3. . Planning file entry does the job of updating appropriate planning mode like Net change or Net change in horizon, BOM re-explode or reset proposal. But,I want to understand in what circumstances we prefer to go with planning mode 2 or 3 other than 1 in MD01 or MD02 or MD03 as anyway this is covered for all necessary items in planning file entry by system. I am fully aware of the functions of all three planning modes. Just I want to understand the situation in which it will be overwritten by user selecting 2 or 3 in MD01 or MD02 or MD03. Because I have never come across such situation where I deliberately run with planning mode 2 or 3 in MD01 or MD02 or MD03.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Sudhar,
There are certain customizing changes which do not set the planning file entry automatically.
For example, if you change the floats in a Scheduling Margin Key in customizing, this change is definitely relavant to MRP but this change does not trigger a planning file entry.
Some master data changes also do not set a planning file entry automatically. For example, changes in standard values of an operation in a routing.
Materials affected by the above changes might already have a planning file entry, but it will definitely not be mode 3.
In the above cases we need to select planning mode 3 manually on the initial screen. And as you know, planning mode which is numerically the highest has the highest priority during a planning run.

Sudhar,
These modes give you a clean look at the supply situation. Mode 2 is valuable when your routings and Bills of Materials are very dynamic (frequent changes). Mode 3 is especially is useful for reducing the volume of planned orders and purchase reqs, when time-based lot sizes are used. I personally never use mode 1 unless I am forced to.
Likewise, if the system resources permit, I always use regenerative MRP. As far as I am concerned, any mode other than regenerative is a compromise that is a workaround for lack of system resources.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
As I already told I am aware of planning mode implications. My question here is, when planning file takes care of all these changes and appropriate planning mode for each material, then why do we need to overwrite planning file entry by choosing 2 or 3 in MRP run rather than adopting planning file entry as it is (planning mode 1). All these planning modes are well taken care by planning file entry during all kind of changes of a material, so what is the necessity to choose 2 or 3 in MRP run.
Hi Sudhar,
Planning Mode 1 is used when:
1.Changes in date and quantity
2.Requirement changes
3.Changes in the lot-sizing procedure or MRP type
Planning Mode 2 is used when:
1.Changes to the material BOM
2.Changes to the sales order BOM
3.Changes to the phantom assembly BOM
4.Changes to references assigned within BOM
5.Changes to material classification
Planning Mode 3 is used when:
1.In-house production time changes
2.Planned delivery time changes
3.Scheduling margin key changes
4.MRP controller changes

Vinod
