Hello,

Regarding the tax determination of sales order, the default tax category has changed from MWST to TTX1, but what are the differences between these two tax categories?

Hello dear user,

And thank you for asking your question on the SAP Community blog.

In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, the tax category (like MWST or TTX1) controls how tax conditions are applied during pricing and tax determination especially in Sales Orders.

Here are the main difference between MWST and TTX1:

Tax Category

Meaning

Common Use

Notes

MWST

Mehrwertsteuer (VAT)

Traditional default VAT tax category in many systems

Used in classic tax configurations

TTX1

Advanced Tax Determination Tax Category 1

Used with the Advanced Tax Determination engine

Supports automated, flexible tax setups in Public Cloud

Why is TTX1 now used by default?

In S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, SAP is increasingly shifting from MWST to TTX1 to support:

  • Advanced Tax Determination (ATD) via tax condition records
  • More standardized tax logic across countries
  • Compatibility with SAP Document and Reporting Compliance (for e-invoicing)

Summary:

Aspect

MWST

TTX1

Legacy

Yes

No

Used in Cloud Public

Legacy only

Recommended

Customizable

Limited

Highly flexible via Manage Tax Codes app

Preferred by SAP

No longer default

Yes, especially in Public Cloud

What to do:

  • If you're still using MWST in some materials or customers, you might want to standardize to TTX1.
  • Use the "Manage Tax Categories" and "Manage Tax Codes" apps to maintain mappings.
  • Maintain condition records via App: Set Tax Rates for Country/Region (App ID: F4075).

I hope my explanation is clear enough and answer your main questions.

Best regards,

Jeremy
