Hello Community,

I'm facing critical issues during a SUM upgrade of S/4HANA system (SID: S4D, DB: HANA 2.00.078) with SUM 2.0 SP22. The upgrade fails during the Extract phase with the error:

"EA-DFPS is in an undefined state that is not safe to be upgraded. Reason: Upgrade wasn't completed - Contact the SAP Support!"

Environment Details:

  • System: SAP S/4HANA (SID: S4D)
  • Database: SAP HANA (Version: 2.00.078.00.1715149848, DB SID: DDH)
  • Current Version: SAP S/4HANA 2023 FPS 01 (02/2024)
  • Target Version: SAP S/4HANA 2023 FPS 02 (10/2024)
  • SUM Version: Initially SUM 2.0 SP19 (PL10); later upgraded to SUM 2.0 SP22
  • OS: Linux X86_64 (OS Version: 2.34)

Problem Overview and Timeline:

  1. During the upgrade process with SUM 2.0 SP19, SUM attempted to access table DDNTT during the step Preprocessing, phase EU_CLONE_ALLSIZES.
  2. I confirmed by querying M_TABLES that the table DDNTT does not exist in the system.
  3. I then Reset and Cleanup the SUM process and I switched to SUM 2.0 SP22 in the hope that the newer version would handle the missing DDNTT differently.
  4. However, SUM now fails during the Extract step, at PREP_INIT/VALCHK_INI phase,  with the error message:
"EA-DFPS is in an undefined state that is not safe to be upgraded. Reason: Upgrade wasn't completed - Contact the SAP Support!"
  5. Using transaction SPAM, I checked the package status and confirmed that all EA-DFPS packages are marked as "Not Imported".

Has anyone encountered a similar situation where SUM fails due to a missing DDNTT table and EA-DFPS packages not being imported?

Any insights, SAP Notes references, or step-by-step guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,
Ben

Hi Challie,

After research and testing, here is the streamlined process I followed to unblock the upgrade:

1. Upgrade SUM Version
I moved from the SUM version 2.0 SP19 (PL10) installed with S4, to the version SUM 2.0 SP22 (PL1) via the Maintenance Planner, then I restarted the upgrade with the new SUM.

2. Reset SUM and Unlock the SAP System
After cleanup and reset, the upgrade stalled at the Extraction phase with the message:
“SAP system has status ‘not modifiable.”
So, I Run Transaction SE06 → System Change Option → Edit, and I Changed Global Setting to "Modifiable"

3. Continue the Upgrade by Running RSUPGRES
SUM remains paused until the repository is in a consistent state:
In SE38, I executed the program RSUPGRES.
I returned to the SUM, and I clicked on Next.
The upgrade will proceed past the Extraction phase.

Hope this helps you resolve the issue!

Ben
