Shift Factor Behavior When Only Early Completion Is Defined

Let’s say I have a strategy-based maintenance plan with the following settings:

  • Cycle = 10 days

  • Shift factor for early completion = 100%

  • Shift factor for late completion = (left blank)

  • Tolerance = 0% (so any variance will trigger a shift)

📅 The order was completed 5 days late.

Now I’m trying to understand how SAP handles the next planned date.

Question:

Since only the shift factor for early completion is maintained, and the order was completed late, will SAP apply the 100% early shift factor to this late completion?

If yes — that would mean:

  • Next plan date is shifted 5 days later (i.e., same effect as if late shift factor = 100%)

If no — then what fallback logic is applied in this case?

📘 What I Know So Far:

  • In IP11, I can define separate shift factors for early and late.

  • But some sources and instructor notes suggest that if only one shift factor is defined, SAP will apply that value for both early and late completions.

  • Others suggest late completions are only shifted if the late shift factor is explicitly defined.

I'm looking for confirmation from anyone who has tested this in a live system or encountered it in certification prep.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Ndah ,

If the shift factor is blank, then the system will consider it 0%. Test the shift factor in the quality server using various data combinations. Please document your expected results in MS Excel. Keep the maintenance cycle at 100 days. 100 days makes the calculation simple.
Do not believe any 'source.' 🙂
