Hello Oliver,
This is a very critical issue for the Judicial Council of California. As per SAP, SAPUI5 JAVA version (SAPUI5 on Portal) should be equal or higher than SAPUI5 ABAP version.
S/4 Version
SAPUI5 on Portal
SAPUI5 on ABAP
2019 (current)
1.71.59
1.71.53
2022
1.71.59
1.108 (SAP_UI 7.57)
2023
1.71.59
1.114.0 (SAP_UI 7.58)
We are currently on S/4 1909 and are unable to upgrade the S/4. we need to do this in next 6 months for our H4S4 (ECM) to continue to be supported after 2024. Due to time limitations, we are unable to migrate to using SAP Launchpad for ABAP right now.
Please provide your valuable input.
If I understand it correctly, you have a backend on S/4hana 2019 which you want to upgrade. You also have a separate frontend abap server which you won’t upgrade because of time limitations. Correct?
How many systems are connected to your frontend server? If you S/4 is the only one, you could move from hub scenario to embedded. Meaning that you move everything from the frontend abap server to your s/4 hana. The effort is not that high and you only have to upgrade one system. This is also the recommendation from sap to go for embedded gateway.

There was a table that didn't get pasted properly.
1. We are on S/4 1909 w/ FES embedded in the backend as a single system.
2. We use Fiori Launchpad for Java (Fiori Framework) portal NW. which has the SAPUI5 1.71.59
3. We use SAP HCM on-premise with compatibility packs. We are required to upgrade to H4S4 for us to continue being supported. We also need to upgrade S/4 as our S/4 1909 will not be supported after 2024.
4. We are told that SAPUI5 on the portal NEEDS to be higher than the FES that is part of S/4 for our Fiori Launchpad to continue to work with S/4
5. SAP is not supporting a higher version of SAPUI5 on portal (after 1.71.59). Newer versions of S/4 2022 and S/4 2023 comes with higher versions of SAPUI5 (1.108 +). We are told that we can't downgrade SAPUI5 on S/4 to be lower than SAPUI5 on portal.
We are in time critical situation and this has become the highest priority issues for Judicial Council of California. Thanks.
