Partial transfer of finished goods to another plant for quality inspection (SAP QM + PP)

Hello, community,

We have the following business scenario:

Finished goods (FERT) are produced at the manufacturing plant.
A portion of the finished goods (e.g., 3 out of 10) needs to be transferred to another plant for quality inspection.
The remaining quantity (7) should be posted to stock at the manufacturing plant.
What are the standard SAP QM and PP solutions to handle this process efficiently?

Is it possible to automate this within standard SAP functionality?

Hello Community,

Thank you for sharing this business scenario. Based on your requirements, here’s how you can handle this process in SAP using standard QM (Quality Management) and PP (Production Planning) functionalities:

post the goods receipt for the full quantity (e.g., 10 units) to the manufacturing plant's stock.

Use SAP QM to create an inspection lot for the finished goods. This can be triggered automatically during the goods receipt if the material is subject to inspection.

Define a sampling procedure in QM to determine the quantity to be inspected (e.g., 3 out of 10 units). This can be configured in transaction QP01.

Transfer the sampled quantity (3 units) to the inspection location or another plant for quality inspection. This can be done using a stock transfer order (transaction VL10B) or a movement type (e.g., 321 for stock transfer to quality inspection).

Perform the quality inspection and record the results in SAP using transaction QA11.

After inspection, if the goods pass quality checks, post the inspected quantity back to unrestricted stock at the manufacturing plant or the target plant. The remaining quantity (7 units) is already in unrestricted stock at the manufacturing plant.

- Yes, this process can be automated within standard SAP functionality. Here’s how:

  • Automatic Inspection Lot Creation: Configure the material master (QM view) to automatically create an inspection lot during goods receipt. This is done by setting the Inspection Lot Origin and Inspection Lot Creation indicators in the material master.

  • Automatic Stock Transfer: Use SAP’s output determination and workflow to automate the stock transfer for the sampled quantity. This can be achieved by defining rules in the system to trigger the stock transfer based on the inspection lot creation.

  • Results Recording and Stock Posting: Automate the posting of inspection results and stock updates using SAP’s batch management and quality notifications.

@ademt1414 Hello Thank you for responding. Inspection lots will be created at both plants. How should we handle this in this case?

@ps0410 Hello, Thank you for the additional clarification. Here’s how you can handle this process in SAP when inspection lots need to be created at both plants (the manufacturing plant and the inspection plant): 1. Handling Inspection Lots at Both Plants At the Manufacturing Plant: Goods Receipt and Inspection Lot Creation: When posting the goods receipt (movement type 101) at the manufacturing plant, an inspection lot will be automatically created if the material is set up for inspection in the material master (QM view). This inspection lot will cover the entire quantity of finished goods (e.g., 10 units). Sample Transfer: Use a sampling procedure (transaction QP01) to determine the quantity to be inspected (e.g., 3 out of 10 units). Transfer these 3 units to the inspection plant using a stock transfer order (transaction VL10B) or a stock movement (e.g., movement type 321 for transfer to quality inspection). At the Inspection Plant: Inspection Lot Creation at the Inspection Plant: When the 3 units arrive at the inspection plant, a new inspection lot must be created for these units. This can be done manually via transaction QA01 or automatically if the system is configured to create inspection lots upon goods receipt at the inspection plant. This inspection lot will be used to record the quality inspection results. Inspection and Results Recording: Perform the quality inspection on the 3 units and record the results in SAP using transaction QA11. If the inspected units pass quality checks, you can transfer them to unrestricted stock (movement type 321) at the inspection plant or return them to the manufacturing plant. 2. Managing Remaining Stock at the Manufacturing Plant The remaining 7 units at the manufacturing plant can be managed using the initial inspection lot created during the goods receipt. If these units do not require further inspection, they can remain in unrestricted stock at the manufacturing plant. Best regards, ademt
